A summer rhinoceros beetle craft that kids love!
Speaking of summer, making beetles (kabutomushi) is always a huge hit with kids!
How about age-appropriate projects using paints, crayons, and scissors, as well as clay or origami?
Since it’s especially hot outside in summer, indoor crafts that kids can enjoy are extremely popular.
With the kabutomushi craft we’re introducing here, you’re sure to see each child create their very own unique, original beetle.
Be sure to try making them together!
Note: Since items made by children are treated as “artworks,” we use the term “制作 (seisaku)” in the text to mean “creation/work.”

[Ages 5 and up] Wall-Mounted Rhinoceros Beetle
How about making rhinoceros beetles as a summer wall decoration? Just cut beetle shapes out of construction paper and stick them together with trees and other elements made from different sheets to complete the craft.
Simply pasting the cutouts is fine, but if you want a three-dimensional look, lightly add folds or small slits.
By overlapping the parts where you made the slits and gluing them together, you can create depth.
When cutting out the beetle shapes, prepare a guide template in advance on the teacher’s or guardian’s side, and have the children cut along that shape.
beetle (specifically, a rhinoceros beetle)

With its glossy black body and large horn, the rhinoceros beetle is as captivating as the king of insects.
Let’s make this cool beetle with origami! The folding method introduced here involves many fine steps and complex techniques, making it suitable for older children who are comfortable with origami and eager to try something challenging.
Fold slowly together with the kids, checking each step as you go.
Try changing the colors or drawing eyes to create different beetles, and display them in your room for fun.

We’ve introduced a variety of rhinoceros beetle crafts.
