Magic Theater

[Preschool Teacher] Easy How-To Guide! Introducing a Magic Theater Kids Will Love ✨ [Nursery School / Kindergarten]
Magic Theater

Kids love theater-style activities, don’t they? Among them, how about trying a magic theater that’s guaranteed to make them say, “Why?” and “Do it again!” The paper you’re holding only has a silhouette drawn on it.

Ask the kids, “What do you think this picture is?” and then slide the paper… and the inside fills in the silhouette.

The kids will be amazed, wondering, “Where did that come from?” The trick is very simple and can be made with construction paper and a clear file, so be sure to make lots of different versions.

What’s inside the box?

[Nursery/Kindergarten] August–September Birthday Party Event (2022): “What’s in the Box?”
What's inside the box?

“What’s in the Box?” is a game where holes are made on both sides of a box so you can put your hands in and guess what’s inside using only your sense of touch.

The front of the box is visible from the outside, so it’s fun even just to watch.

The birthday kids can, of course, be the ones to put their hands in, but it’s also great if the teacher demonstrates.

If the teacher is the one taking the challenge, try putting in items that add a little suspense.

If you have the birthday child do it, be mindful of kids who might be scared and plan the event so it can proceed even if they choose not to participate.

Magic

Simple magic tricks to liven up a birthday party: Birthday cake magic
Magic

Magic is a perfect act for birthday parties, letting you see kids’ amazed faces and bright smiles.

Perform a birthday cake–themed trick and give the children a delightful surprise.

Use a folded sheet of white construction paper, show that there’s nothing inside, then push a small square piece of paper into it.

After saying a magic word, open the paper and… inside is a splendid birthday cake! The secret is very simple: there’s just one extra pocket made on the outside.

You can also have fun by adding your own original ideas.

puppet show

How about putting on a puppet show with dolls and stuffed animals at the birthday party? You’ll need to get creative with the background and set, but it will surely be a big hit.

Choose a story that kids will enjoy watching, such as something seasonal, a birthday-themed tale, or a popular fairy tale.

Creating an original story is great, too.

Practice the movements and staging repeatedly so you can draw the audience into the story, and make it a fun and memorable birthday party.

Mysterious PocketNEW!

[Shiratori] March Birthday Party Fun: “The Mysterious Pocket”
Mysterious PocketNEW!

Let’s have fun singing the beloved children’s song “Fushigina Pocket” (The Magic Pocket).

Are those forest animals? I heard there’s a birthday child, so they’ve brought all sorts of tasty treats.

Cookies, biscuits, doughnuts, fruit… When you pat the pocket, they multiply and keep coming out.

Before taking things out of the pocket, describe their features—like “Round, with a hole, and sweet?”—so the children can imagine what will appear next and enjoy the guessing.

At the end, a cake is completed, making it perfect for a birthday party.

Let’s enjoy a quiz using two illustrated panels.

Shuffle the panels so the illustrations can’t be seen, then ask the children, “Which one is the ◯◯?” and have them answer.

Start by shuffling once or twice, and gradually increase the number of shuffles.

The fun twist in this idea is that it ends like a magic trick! Even though the panels were supposed to show an orange and an apple, before you know it, they both turn into oranges.

The secret is that you’re performing it by layering the apple illustration on top of the orange!

Quiz

Quiz

Let’s enjoy a quiz with the children at the birthday party.

It’s fun when the caregiver asks the questions, but letting the birthday kids who are turning four or five be the quizmasters can really liven things up! With a silhouette quiz, the children asking the questions only need to show the papers in order, so they don’t have to memorize any difficult lines.

To the younger kids, the older ones running the quiz will look like role models.

Coming up with topics and preparing them is part of the fun, too.

Be sure to create a quiz that everyone can enjoy together.

Hand dance

Hand dance

A hand dance performed with gloved hands that really stands out against a black backdrop.

With this hand dance, even teachers who aren’t confident at dancing will be fine! Pick songs kids love, put on gloves, and dance by moving your hands to keep the rhythm.

Start with white gloves, then switch to colorful gloves at the end—children will be thrilled.

It’s also fun for them to guess, “Which hands are Ms./Mr.

○○’s?” Planning the staging is enjoyable too, and adding patterns to the gloves makes it extra cute.

Fun to guess! Envelope TheaterNEW!

Fun to guess! Envelope TheaterNEW!

This is an envelope theater you can use for birthday parties and fun gatherings.

If you put in pictures of vegetables and other items, or illustrations for various events, it also works great as a fun introduction to those occasions.

After cutting the plastic sheet (shrink plastic), trim the envelope to match its size and turn it into a window.

Apply double-sided tape everywhere except the top.

Cut the construction paper to stick alongside the plastic sheet, add double-sided tape, and attach it from the bottom up in order.

For the left and right sides, attach tape only on the front surface.

Peel off the double-sided tape and stick it onto the envelope window.

Insert thick paper or similar to add strength.

Add a handle and decorate it however you like! It’s recommended because it can be used in many different situations.

hand play song

[Nursery & Kindergarten] 5 Fun Hand-Play Activities to Liven Things Up [Birthday Party]
hand play song

For the opening of a birthday party, be sure to include fingerplay songs.

They not only help children have fun while they wait for the party to begin, but also help them understand, “The birthday party is about to start.” Since birthday parties bring together children of various ages, it’s best to choose fingerplays with simple actions and lyrics.

When everyone shares a cheerful atmosphere, it naturally encourages them to express their feelings of celebrating their friends.

The most important point is for the caregiver to have fun and liven up the birthday party!
