I’m Hiyoko-sensei, a former nursery school teacher from Hyogo Prefecture. Ever since I was five, my dream was to become a childcare worker, and before I knew it, 20 years had passed since I achieved that dream. Through singing and playing with the children, I kept working with the spirit of someone in their twenties, even as I increasingly felt my physical limits year by year (haha). Making washi involves softening the fibers by boiling the bark of the source trees and pounding it with sticks, then whitening the color with bleach before breaking it down into pulp.

Next, a tool called a sugeta is used to form the mixture into flat sheets of paper.

It takes time and effort to produce even a single sheet of washi, which is precisely why it’s a perfect material for a commemorative preschool graduation certificate.

Once the washi is ready, decorate it with parts made from construction paper or similar materials to create a certificate that’s uniquely your own.

This idea uses only construction paper and features a pop-up potted flower.

The flowerpot is given a three-dimensional effect by adding straight and curved cuts along the fold of a sheet of construction paper folded in half.

For the flower, cut a circle from construction paper, fold it in half twice, then make mountain folds outward on the side opposite the creases.

Next, round off the corners to form the flower shape.

Attach the flower above the pot, and it’s complete.
