Fun to make in childcare! A special feature of horse craft ideas

Here’s an introduction to popular horse crafts for preschools and kindergartens.

Horses are familiar, friendly animals for children, often appearing in picture books and stories.

Using everyday materials like paper cups, paper plates, and milk cartons, these horse crafts spark children’s creativity and let them enjoy steps like coloring and gluing.

After they’re finished, kids can play pretend together with their horses or use them as decorations, expanding the fun beyond the craft itself.

We’ve gathered age-appropriate ideas, so feel free to incorporate them into your class activities.

Challenge yourself to making stilts

Nowadays you can buy stilts made from all kinds of materials, but this is an idea for making traditional stilts using real bamboo! First, prepare two bamboo poles for the uprights, choosing ones that are as similar in thickness as possible.

Then prepare one bamboo piece for the footrests, and make sure it is thicker than the uprights.

After cutting the two upright poles to the same length, cut the footrest bamboo into two pieces, each a little longer than one bamboo node.

Split each of those pieces in half to make four, then pair them up and tie one end of each pair together with string.

Open the untied ends, sandwich an upright between them, and tie securely from multiple directions to finish.

Be careful: if the knots are loose, the footrests may drop when you step on them.

Drawing a horse illustration can be quite challenging… If you feel that way, here’s a great idea for a horse you can complete by simply sticking pieces together! Parents or teachers can lightly sketch on construction paper, cut out the parts, and then stick them on with double-sided tape or glue to finish.

Use round stickers for the eyes, and draw the nose with a pen or crayon.

It’s a lovely project that can be adapted so infants to preschoolers can enjoy it.

Layering the construction paper also creates a 3D effect, making it a striking New Year’s card.

Give it a try!

Let’s make it by sticking! Uma-Daruma

Let me introduce a craft idea for a horse daruma with an adorable pose of a horse looking up at you.

First, cut four strip-shaped pieces from red construction paper.

Arrange them in a radial pattern, glue them together at the center, then bring all the ends together and glue to form a sphere.

Attach a horse face made from another piece of construction paper to the top of the sphere, place the sphere on a square base, and glue it down to finish.

I’m presenting it as a horse daruma this time, but you can adapt the idea to match each year’s zodiac animal.

You could also add a piece on the base with the characters for “Welcoming the New Year.”

Let's make a horse head out of newspaper!

Here’s a 3D horse craft idea using newspaper! You’ll need three sheets of newspaper, scissors, and cellophane tape.

Use newspaper you have at home to make items that transform you into a horse.

With the three sheets, you’ll create a hat, a horse face, and a horse mane.

There are key points to watch out for in each step, so follow along carefully with the video as you make it.

Once you tape the three parts together, it’s complete.

You can also make reins to expand the ways you can play!

Draw a cute horse! Tips for brush-pen illustrations

Here’s a wonderful idea you can use when you want to depict a dynamic, lively horse! When children try it, it’s best for a teacher or guardian to first make a rough sketch and then have the kids trace it using a brush pen.

For children who are more motivated, prepare steps where they can draw their own sketch or add color—this can really spark their creativity.

If you explain how to handle the brush pen and go over the rules before starting, they can work safely and learn to take good care of the tools while they create!

Art sparks children’s creativity! Kids’ ideas and perspectives can sometimes reveal things adults might overlook or fail to notice.

This time, let’s use marbles, paper, and paint to create a dynamic, free-form horse face.

First, roll marbles dipped in black paint across the paper to make patterns.

Next, color in the areas that look like the horse’s face and mane with colored pens or paint to finish.

It looks like it’ll become a one-of-a-kind, original New Year’s card—no two pieces will be the same.

Once children understand the steps, drawing may feel less intimidating and more approachable.

For kids who feel frustrated when their drawings don’t turn out as they imagined, breaking the process into step-by-step parts can help them work with confidence.

In infant classes, children can try coloring illustrations drawn by teachers or guardians and tracing lines.

In preschool classes, encourage children to draw first and then challenge themselves to finish by adding color.
