Let’s dissolve the eggshell!

Let’s try an experiment where the hard eggshell seems to disappear.
Take an egg, wash it well, pat it dry, and submerge it in a container filled with vinegar.
After about two days, the once pure-white shell will appear to have vanished.
When you take the egg out, there’s no hard shell; instead, it feels squishy, like a rubber toy ball.
By the way, be careful—eggs used in this experiment aren’t safe to eat!
Observation and experimental results on apple discoloration

When you cut an apple and leave it out, the cut surface starts to discolor, right? Let’s observe that discoloration process.
We will monitor 11 conditions over time: a plain (untreated) apple, wrapped in plastic wrap, soaked in vinegar water, sugar water, salt water, honey water, milk, lemon water, a carbonated drink, plain water, and stored in the refrigerator.
Let’s compile a report on which one discolored the fastest and which one stayed the freshest-looking!
Keeping/storing a rhinoceros beetle as a pet

Speaking of summer insects, rhinoceros beetles come to mind, so how about researching and observing them? If you go to a home improvement store or a pet shop, you can buy not only rhinoceros beetles but also rearing kits and food.
You can keep and observe two males together, or keep a male and a female as a pair.
If things go well and they lay eggs and overwinter successfully, you can raise many rhinoceros beetles the following year!
Gauss accelerator

A Gauss accelerator is a phenomenon in which a steel ball, accelerated by magnetic force, launches the ball in front of it as if ignoring the law of conservation of momentum.
How about using this to create a project for an independent study? Try building various mechanisms and aim for a one-of-a-kind original course!

Snow globe making

How about making a snow globe for your independent research project? Everything you need— a jar, a figurine, a sponge, decorative glitter or origami paper, glue, and liquid glue—can all be found at a 100-yen shop.
The key is to use clear liquid glue! If it isn’t clear, the water seems to get cloudy.
Give it a try!
smart ball

Do you know the game called Smart Ball? It’s a Showa-era toy that looks like a pachinko machine: you launch a ball onto a slanted board, thread it through the pegs, and try to land it in the scoring slots at the bottom to compete for points.
Let’s try making one ourselves! Use a rubber band as the power to shoot the ball, then hammer in lots of nails to create the ball’s path.
You can also draw illustrations on the board if you like!
How to make a tassel easily

Let’s make a stylish tassel! It’s perfect for fashion-conscious elementary school kids.
You can get everything for around 100 yen, so the material cost stays low.
Try mixing different colors or adding a key charm to create a tassel full of originality with your own sense of style! If you give your finished tassel to family or friends, you’ll be sure to become a hit!
