What is the flower that shouts in the morning?

What is the flower that shouts in the morning?

This is a riddle that asks for “a flower that roars in the morning.” The key to solving it is to first think of flowers that do something in the morning.

There’s a well-known flower that blooms in the morning, right? That’s right—the morning glory (asagao).

You might think, “Morning glories do act in the morning, but they don’t roar…” So why is the answer morning glory? Because it’s a pun on the sound of a roar—‘gaoo!’—which is contained in ‘asagao.’ Flowers usually bloom quietly and don’t roar, but if there really were a flower that roared, I’d love to see it at least once.

What gets hotter as it gets colder?

This puzzle is tricky because there are many possible answers.

Things that get hotter as it gets colder… You might be thinking of hand warmers or clothing, but the correct answer is something else.

First, try picturing a winter scene.

List a few things you associate with it, and think about “getting hot” as the keyword.

Also pay close attention to the fact that it’s written in hiragana! The answer is something everyone knows, and you’re likely to see it at least once in summer.

Here’s a hint: it’s something that melts in heat.

If everyone competes or gets creative with how they present the questions, it gets even more fun.

Why not use Pokémon riddles to strengthen your bonds with family and friends?

What animal is bigger than a whale but smaller than a killifish?

What animal is bigger than a whale but smaller than a killifish?

dolphin

To say that there’s no animal bigger than a whale and smaller than a killifish, we use a pun: we say “iruka” (which means dolphin) as a play on words with “inai” (there isn’t). The trick is to change the intonation when you say the comeback line, like “Sonna no iruka!” (which can sound like “Is that a dolphin?” or “Who would buy that?” depending on intonation). The correct answer is “iruka” (dolphin).

Trick riddles can leave you feeling stumped, but seeing the answer often makes you think, “Ah, I get it now!” or “So that’s how it works!” This time, let’s take on riddles said to be unsolvable for 80% of people.

For example, one question goes: “One day, a precious musical instrument broke and could no longer be used.

What instrument was it?”

What do you hold while eating rice?

What do you hold while eating rice?

Something you “hold” while eating… A busy mother might hold her child while eating something safe even if it’s dropped, but normally you don’t hold anything in your arms during a meal, right? So no matter how much you think about what you could hold while eating, you won’t reach the answer.

The key to solving this riddle is to recall what you always do during a meal, and to try expressing “dakko” (to hold/hug) with a different word.

The correct answer is “ita” (board)! Because you say “ita, dakimasu”—a pun on “Itadakimasu.”

What vehicle do you pedal and pedal but end up going back and forth in the same place?

What vehicle do you pedal and pedal but end up going back and forth in the same place?

When you row a boat or pedal a bicycle, you move forward, right? But the answer to this riddle seems to be something that goes back and forth in the same place no matter how much you push.

The key to solving it is to focus on “going back and forth.” If you’re an elementary school student, that phrase might make something click.

Here’s a hint: the park.

Think back to your time playing at the park—there was a fun piece of playground equipment that goes back and forth! That’s right, the answer is a swing.

Did you get it right?

Are you bad at trick questions? I couldn’t even get the classic one—“Which is heavier, 1 kg of iron or 1 kg of cotton?”—I just kept groaning and never reached the right answer.

I’m the type who overthinks and self-destructs, assuming there must be some hidden twist just because it’s presented as a question.

I can’t handle normal trick questions, so if they’re labeled “super hard,” then… As for those tougher trick questions, the rising YouTuber Chonmage Kozou—who suddenly appeared with the greeting “Hikiniku desu!”—is enjoying them too.

Elementary schoolers who don’t have much time, give them a try!
