These are the kinds of problems used in IQ tests and elementary school entrance exams.

There are quizzes where you first look at an initial picture and take in various pieces of information before being asked questions, as well as quizzes where you look only at a picture and guess the answer—both require attention and concentration.

Don’t underestimate children; they often observe details more closely than you might think.

Letting young kids try these quizzes designed for adults might lead to new discoveries and turn out to be quite interesting.

Word riddle: ‘What is the ○○ occasion?’

This is a riddle where the answers end with the syllable “sai.” It’s easy enough for small children to understand, and depending on the prompt, answers like “gomen nasai” (I’m sorry) or “yame nasai” (Stop that) can even make adults chuckle a bit.

Kids will probably feel confident and eager to answer, too, don’t you think?

Vegetable Riddles

Bitter, astringent, and sometimes even slimy depending on the type—vegetables can be a formidable foe for kids.

Plenty of middle and high schoolers are fine with stir-fried veggies but struggle with raw ones.

I’ve heard that the bitterness of green peppers and the harshness of carrots have been made much milder through selective breeding, but many kids still avoid them.

That’s why I’m hoping a little “vegetable quiz” fun might help ease vegetable aversion, even just a bit.

If you search video sites, you’ll find several “vegetable quizzes”! And when you get tired of the video quizzes, it could be nice to draw together and learn the names of vegetables as you go.

Puns and wordplay have existed since ancient times, and even the seemingly difficult kanji in haiku, “俳,” carried meanings like “humor” and “comical.” Because a udon shop’s pot contains nothing but hot water, people joked that it’s “just hot water” (yubakari), which sounds like “all talk” (iubakkari), and used it to tease those who never take action.

With stories like that sprinkled in, let’s all enjoy some trick riddles together! It could be fun to set aside time to make your own riddles, too.

A bit of forced logic or far-fetched reasoning might actually make things even livelier.

It’s not uncommon for children’s curiosity to grow from riddles and wordplay.

When an uncle from another region comes to visit and speaks with different words or intonation, a child might think, “Oh, so this is what a dialect is,” and from such small moments their interests expand.

Enjoy a fun time with ‘spark-of-genius riddles’ that help kids become sensitive to language! “What kind of cake makes you feel at ease when you eat it?” → The answer is “hotcake” (because ‘hotto’ means ‘relieved’ in Japanese).
