Fun! A collection of handmade toy ideas made from Styrofoam

Do you have any Styrofoam at home?

You might not buy it very often, but it’s actually closer to you than you think—like the food trays that hold fish or meat, or the cushioning material that comes with purchases.

Even if you don’t have any around, you can easily get some at 100-yen shops nowadays, where they sell colored Styrofoam and pieces in various shapes.

In this article, we introduce how to make a fun toy, so be sure to give it a try!

Marble Maze

Smooth Whip Clay: Squeeze onto a Styrofoam tray to make a marble maze! [Craft]
Marble Maze

Let’s make a marble maze using a polystyrene foam tray.

Be sure to color the tray beforehand.

Sketch your maze on a piece of paper that fits inside the tray, then place it over the tray and trace firmly with a pencil.

This will dent the tray along those lines and transfer your design.

Next, trace the transferred lines on the tray with whipped clay.

If you want to make a trap hole, first mark it with a pencil, then press down with a thick straw—it works well.

Decorate by placing beads on the clay or adding small figurines, and you’re done.

Choose a theme and give it a try!

Glider

[Styrofoam Craft] I tried making a glider out of Styrofoam!
Glider

Let’s try making a glider using thin styrofoam.

Gliders are fun both indoors and outdoors, so they’re very popular with kids.

First, imagine the glider you want to make and draw the fuselage and wing parts onto thick paper or cardstock.

Cut them out to use as templates.

Using the templates, cut the shapes from the styrofoam, then assemble the pieces.

Attach an adhesive soft cushion to the nose as a weight, and it’s done! Try drawing on it with a pen to create your own original glider.

blow-off pipe

What did you used to call this? I made a nostalgic toy ✨

“Try It” – WANIMA

We’ll show you how to make a blow-up pipe toy where a ball floats when you blow.

You’ll need one flexible straw, one ball-shaped polystyrene (styrofoam) ball, and one small condiment cup (the kind that’s handy for holding mayonnaise in lunch boxes).

The steps are very simple: cut a cross-shaped slit in the bottom of the small cup and widen the hole.

Insert the shorter bent end of the straw into the hole, and place the styrofoam ball in the cup—that’s it! You can decorate the ball with tape or markers to make it cute.

If the ball doesn’t rise when you blow, adjust how far the straw is inserted.

Mont Blanc

Let’s make a Mont Blanc cake that looks just like the real thing using polystyrene foam and yarn! Prepare a ball-shaped polystyrene foam piece with a diameter of 5 cm.

Leave the bottom quarter of the foam ball uncovered, and apply fabric double-sided tape all over the rest.

Apply double-sided tape to a madeleine cup as well, and peel off its release paper in advance.

Next, peel off only the release paper on the bottom portion of the ball and wrap yarn around and around tightly with no gaps.

Place it on the cup you prepared, and continue wrapping the yarn all the way to the top; then cut the yarn with scissors.

Finish by placing a yellow pom-pom on top to resemble a chestnut.

If you trim the “chestnut” with scissors, it will look even more like a real Mont Blanc!

teddy bear

(Styrofoam) Small and cute! How to make a bear [DIY]
teddy bear

Let’s make a small teddy bear plush using polystyrene foam! Here’s what you’ll need: two foam balls, a lightweight towel of your choice, wire, felt, a craft knife, scissors, and glue.

Since you’ll make the head and body separately, using a slightly smaller ball for the body will give a cleaner finish.

Glue the towel onto each foam ball and trim any excess with scissors.

Make the ears, legs, and other parts the same way, then use wire to attach and secure them to the head and body.

For the finer details like the mouth and eyes, using felt or beads will give a more three-dimensional look.

Change the towel colors to create a colorful little bear!
