[Easy & Fun] Craft Ideas Using Pipe Cleaners

Pipe cleaners can be used for a variety of purposes—bundling items, decoration, and wrapping.

Because they have thin wire inside, you can bend them into any shape you like, and their easy availability at 100-yen shops has made them popular for crafts in recent years.

In this article, we introduce a range of craft ideas using pipe cleaners.

Some of these ideas are perfect for school research projects, so if something catches your eye, give it a try.

Using pipe cleaners in a variety of colors will help you create even more attractive pieces.

Handmade chenille keychain

Let’s make a cute bee keychain.

First, stick double-sided tape all over a chenille stem and shape it into a rectangle.

Wrap a yellow chenille stem around it, then wrap a brown one to create the stripes.

Make wings from a clear file sheet, attach them to the body with the brown chenille stem, and add eyes.

Finally, attach the keychain hardware and you’re done! With a bit of creativity, you can make all kinds of insects and animals, so try making your own original keychains.

Shuwa-shuwa Honey Lemon 350ml – Sharou

Many girls probably love wands, don’t they? You often see them in anime with magical-girl themes.

This time, I’ll introduce an idea for making a simple wand.

Thread ten 2 cm pieces of straw and five beads alternately onto a 30 cm chenille stem (pipe cleaner), then shape it into a star.

Twist the two ends of the stem together to secure it, trim any excess, then take a 15 cm chenille stem folded in half, hook it onto the star, and twist it into a single rod.

Slide on a straw and glue it in place to finish.

It might also look cute decorated with washi tape, etc.

Making felt flowers

Why not try making flowers that never wilt using felt and pipe cleaners? It’s very easy and cute.

First, cut petals out of felt.

Slightly fold the base of each petal and snip along the crease—this is where you’ll thread the pipe cleaner later.

Cut a light green pipe cleaner into three 4 cm pieces.

Lay two pieces in an X shape, then place the third straight across and twist to form the stamen.

Wrap a green pipe cleaner around to make the stem, and wrap a yellow pipe cleaner around the tip of the stamen to represent the pollen.

Finally, thread the petals onto the stem and glue them in place to finish.

Try making your favorite flowers!

Thread beads onto pipe cleaners to make all kinds of little accessories.

First curl one end of the pipe cleaner, then thread on a bead.

Insert the curled tip into the bead’s hole, pull the other side to lock it in place, and after that just add your favorite beads and form a loop.

Make it larger for a bracelet, or use flower-shaped beads to create a flower crown for a doll.

You can also use them for cable ties, tiny bottle decorations, and many other situations.

Because you’re using pipe cleaners, the beads don’t slip off easily after threading, making this an easy activity for toddlers and lower-grade elementary school children.

A cute doll that conveys a sense of three-dimensionality and softness is assembled using chenille stems (pipe cleaners).

You’ll use thicker, fluffy pipe cleaners, twisting and combining them, then shaping them to achieve your ideal form.

How many pipe cleaners you use is an important point: proceed while considering a size that allows the whole figure to be sturdy and a quantity that gives it dimensionality.

Once the overall shape is set, attach parts like the face to finish it—your choice of parts here adds originality to the craft.
