J.S. Bach Popular Songs Ranking [2026] (91–100)

Unaccompanied Partita “Chaconne”J.S.Bach91rank/position

The “Chaconne,” the fifth piece of the Sonata and Partita No.

2 for Solo Violin.

A “chaconne” is the name of a dance-form piece in which a brief, set melodic and harmonic pattern appears at the outset and is then repeated persistently while developing in various ways.

In this piece as well, the theme is presented in the opening eight measures, and over the course of 30 repetitions of that structure, music of a grandeur scarcely believable for an unaccompanied violin unfolds.

Chaconne from Partita No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1004, for solo violinJ.S.Bach

A masterpiece for unaccompanied violin by Johann Sebastian Bach, the German composer who epitomizes the Baroque era.

Spanning about 15 minutes, this large-scale set of variations demands the ability to convey rich harmony and counterpoint on a single violin.

Some interpret it as a memorial tribute mourning the death of Bach’s wife, Maria Barbara, imparting a solemn quality and emotional depth to the listener.

Characterized by structural complexity that makes full use of lush harmonic writing and counterpoint, it has long been esteemed as a landmark in the solo violin repertoire.

While quintessentially Baroque, the work also conveys powerful inner expression and energy, continuing to be cherished today as a piece that inspires profound empathy.

Piano solo arrangements by Brahms and Busoni are also well known—be sure to give them a listen.

Chaconne, the 5th movement from Violin Partita No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1004, for solo violinJ.S.Bach93rank/position

Among the works Bach left for solo violin, this piece is one of the most famous.

The Partita No.

2 consists of five movements, the last of which is the Chaconne.

Spanning about 15 minutes, this monumental movement boasts striking melodies, compelling development, and superb architecture, and it can be regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces of the Baroque era.

From the dark, mournful tone in D minor to passages in D major filled with hope, its rich musical expression captivates the listener.

Technically demanding, it is a piece many violinists aspire to play.

Johannes Brahms and Ferruccio Busoni arranged it for solo piano as well, and those versions are also wonderful—do give them a listen.

I hear a voice calling me to awaken.J.S.Bach94rank/position

Cantata No.

140 by Bach.

It consists of seven movements, and the first, “Chorale: Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme” (Wake, Awake, for Night Is Flying), features the warm timbre of oboes and strings that feels wonderfully comforting.

It’s perfect as background music for enjoying a Christmas lunch or afternoon tea rather than dinner! Listening to its refined-sounding melody makes me feel as though I, too, become a bit more elegant.

The second piece is notable for its prominent flute part.

It demands a high level of technical skill and musicality from the flutist.

Among the movements, the Polonaise is especially famous—the word means “in the Polish style.” You’ve likely heard it at least once.

The seventh movement, Badinerie, is also well known, so I recommend listening to it as well.
