Franz Joseph Haydn Popular Song Ranking [2026] (51–60)

Symphony No. 86 in D majorFranz Joseph Haydn57rank/position

Composed in 1786 on commission for a new orchestra in Paris, this is the sixth work of the Paris Symphonies.

Its instrumentation is among the largest in the set, and accordingly the workmanship is exceptionally refined, resulting in an even more brilliant and dazzling composition.

88 in G major: I.

Adagio – Allegro; II.

Symphony No. 88 in G major “V”Franz Joseph Haydn59rank/position

J. Haydn – Hob I:88 – Symphony No. 88 in G major (Brüggen)
Symphony No. 88 in G major “V”Franz Joseph Haydn

It is popularly known as the “V.” This refers to the cataloging number assigned by a London publisher when issuing a collection of Haydn’s symphonies.

Among the series of “Paris Symphonies,” it is considered the finest and is regarded as a masterpiece on par with the “Salomon Symphonies.”

Symphony No. 89 in F major, “Letter W”Franz Joseph Haydn60rank/position

J. Haydn – Hob I:89 – Symphony No. 89 in F major (Brüggen)
Symphony No. 89 in F major, “Letter W”Franz Joseph Haydn

Composed in 1787 as a companion to the preceding Symphony No.

88, it is sometimes referred to as the “W-shaped” symphony.

Because the second and fourth movements freely repurpose material from the “Lyra Concerto in F major” composed the previous year, and because the first and third movements were written in a rather perfunctory manner compared to Haydn’s other symphonies, many Haydn scholars do not hold Symphony No.

89 in high regard.

Incidentally, the opening theme of the first movement resembles the melody of the children’s song Shojoji no Tanukibayashi, composed by Shimpei Nakayama.

Symphony No. 8 in G major [Evening]Franz Joseph Haydn

Symphony No.

La Tempesta, Presto.

This is the final piece of the trilogy.

Performed by the Sinfonia Italiana Orchestra, conducted by Andrea Dindo.

Symphony No. 92 in G major “Oxford”Franz Joseph Haydn62rank/position

This symphony is called the “Oxford” because Haydn is said to have conducted it at the ceremony in which he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Oxford in 1791.

However, this nickname is something of a misnomer: the work was actually composed earlier for its Paris premiere and dedicated to Count d’Ogny, who had previously commissioned the “Paris” Symphonies.

It is said that, having not yet composed anything specifically for England, Haydn brought a recently completed symphony with him to the degree ceremony.

Symphony No. 93 in D majorFranz Joseph Haydn63rank/position

J. Haydn – Hob I:93 – Symphony No. 93 in D major (Brüggen)
Symphony No. 93 in D majorFranz Joseph Haydn

It is one of the London Symphonies.

The premiere took place in London on February 17, 1792.

A newspaper at the time reported that “Haydn led the performance while playing the harpsichord.” However, despite the fact that a harpsichord was no longer necessary for the performance, it is thought that the instrument was used at the premiere to introduce the famous composer Haydn to the London audience.
