so as not to wipe my nose

The origin of suit sleeve buttons is said to trace back to Napoleon, renowned as a French hero. During France’s invasion of Russia, it’s said that soldiers, suffering from the extreme cold, wiped their runny noses on their jacket sleeves. As a result, when they marched, many soldiers’ sleeves were stiff with dried mucus. A leading theory holds that metal buttons were added to the sleeves to prevent soldiers from wiping their noses on them.

Shaved ice has been eaten since the Heian period.88rank/position

Shaved ice has been eaten since the Heian period.

Shaved ice is a treat you crave in the hot summer.

It’s a classic dessert where finely shaved, ice-cold ice is topped with sweet syrup, but its roots go back to the Heian period.

Aristocrats of that era stored ice cut in winter in icehouses and shaved it to eat in summer.

Back then, instead of syrup like we use today, they poured a sweet liquid made from a plant called amakazura over the ice.

Knowing the history of shaved ice might make this quintessential summer delight taste even better.

scrubbing brush

A tawashi is a cleaning tool made by bundling fibers, used for washing dishes and vegetables. The character 束 (taba) means “to bundle,” and 子 (ko) is a suffix that denotes a tool. It’s familiar to many older people as tawashi, but surprisingly few know it’s written with the kanji 束子, so it often appears in kanji quizzes aimed at seniors. Because it’s usually written in hiragana in daily life, the kanji form is considered more difficult.

pufferfish90rank/position

pufferfish

Many people who enjoy difficult kanji quizzes or who like fish might be able to read this.

But for others, it’s a kanji that likely gives no clue what it refers to.

It’s written as “river” and “pig”…

the answer is fugu (pufferfish).

While some types of fugu live in freshwater, most people think of the sea when they hear “fugu,” so if you go by the literal meaning of the kanji, many probably couldn’t arrive at the answer.

Incidentally, in China this kanji is said to refer to pufferfish that swim up rivers, and because their puffed-up appearance resembles a pig, the characters 河豚 (“river pig”) came to be used.
