A three-piece rock band formed in Nagasaki in 2004.
The origin of the band’s name comes from when they initially played ska-punk and called themselves “SKANK” (SKA + PUNK), but drummer Yuki Ikemoto misread it as “SHANK,” and the name stuck.

These days, you can spot their name at just about every punk festival in Japan.
They also host their own festival, BLAZE UP NAGASAKI, held annually in their hometown.
What stands out most about their songs is how stylish they are: meticulously crafted guitar riffs, ingenious drumming, and a piercing, husky voice that’s downright captivating.
Their calm, understated stage banter at live shows also has a unique charm.

Good Night DarlingSHANK2rank/position

The song included on SHANK’s album “Calling,” released in May 2012 by the three-piece melodic hardcore band from Nagasaki, portrays the feelings of self-questioning on sleepless nights.
While expressing the contradictory emotion that “everything is right and everything is wrong,” it conveys a longing for freedom and the importance of cherishing the beautiful moments in life.
The track carries a message urging listeners to sing out loud and live alongside music, making it a piece that symbolizes SHANK’s musicality and direction as a band.
It captures introspective moments in the stillness of the night and the sense of release and joy that lies beyond them, resonating deeply with those who struggle with anxiety and worries.

Set the fireSHANK4rank/position

Starting with quiet guitar arpeggios and vocals, then building into a driving interlude and finally breaking into a two-beat—this feels like a textbook example of melodic hardcore, doesn’t it? I can picture the scene at a live show: fans on someone’s shoulders pushing toward the front during the calm opening, then all diving at once the moment the intense interlude kicks in.
First Light AnthemSHANK5rank/position

Starting with a characteristically dark SHANK-style intro, the song instantly shifts into a breezy phrase and keeps accelerating, building a thrilling sense of speed—it’s incredibly satisfying to listen to.
The groove changes one after another, and every time it does, you’ll want to move your body.
This track is the first song on the 2015 mini-album “SHANK OF THE MORNING.”
