When I attended my first music festival as a freshman in college, I was captivated by its charm—“I can’t believe there’s a place this free and this fun.” I share information about wonderful music festivals every day to help grow the community of festival fans.

Lured by the spring weather, many of you might be feeling it’s about time to soak up some music outdoors.

April is the season when rock festivals across Japan kick into gear.

From conveniently located urban events to large-scale festivals where you can relax in nature, there’s a diverse and distinctive lineup.

In this article, we’ll introduce rock festivals held in Japan in April.

Each venue has its own vibe, access, and ways to enjoy, so use this as a hint to find the festival that catches your eye.

JAM FES is an independently organized festival held every year during Golden Week by Nishi-Eifuku JAM. The venue first opened in Shinjuku in 1980 and moved to Nishi-Eifuku, Suginami in 2018. This long-running event gathers a diverse array of bands with the warm, community-rooted feel of a neighborhood live house. Centered on rock, punk, and alternative, its eclectic lineup spans up-and-coming acts to mid-career artists. On some days during the festival, attendees can move freely between the main space and the adjoining UNDERGROUND, making for an intense eight days of hopping between two stages. Scheduled from April 29 to May 6, 2026.
