[Space] Did You Know? Saturn Trivia Quiz (1–10)
The rings of Saturn span tens of thousands of kilometers in width, but how thin is their thinnest part said to be?
See the answer
about 10 m
When we observe Saturn from Earth, sometimes its rings seem to disappear. This happens because the rings approach an edge-on angle relative to Earth. You can see them from above, but not from the side. Imagining a CD makes it easy to understand.
What is the approximate diameter of Saturn’s rings in kilometers?
See the answer
Approximately 270,000 km
The ring section you often see in photos of Saturn alone spans over about 270,000 km. In recent years, an even larger outer ring called the Phoebe ring has been observed, drawing attention. As research progresses, that “about 270,000 km” figure may continue to grow.
What are Saturn’s rings made of?
See the answer
ice
Given Saturn’s name and its overall color, the answer might have been a bit surprising. The first person to observe Saturn’s rings was the famous Galileo Galilei. He observed them in 1610 using a telescope he built himself. However, at the time he didn’t realize there were rings around Saturn, and instead thought he was seeing three stars lined up.

What is the name of the first spacecraft in the world to reach Saturn?
See the answer
Pioneer 11
It was a NASA probe launched in 1973, and it reached Saturn in 1979. It operated until 1995, when it ceased activity. It's amazing that it drifted through space for over 20 years, continually sending data back to Earth. Incidentally, it also conducted observations of Jupiter before arriving at Saturn.
In conclusion
How many questions do you think you got right? Since this planet is still shrouded in many mysteries, future research will likely update the answers here as well.
That process of uncovering the unknown is one of the joys of exploring the universe, isn’t it? If you enjoyed this, be sure to have your friends and family give it a try too!
