Buying a craft kit and finishing it up quickly is great, but gathering the materials yourself and making it with a little effort can be fun too.

An hourglass is perfect for that kind of project.

You can make one with a plastic bottle, a straw, and some fine, free-flowing sand! Finding sand that flows well enough for an hourglass might be a bit of a challenge, though.

Fix the straw in place with thick paper or clay, then connect two sand-filled plastic bottles with tape, and you’re done! If you have the materials, you can make it in about half a day.

Fifth- or sixth-graders can do it on their own without help.

Thin hourglasses made with thick paper are also popular.

Air hockey with cardboard

You can make an air hockey game out of cardboard.

This way, you can enjoy it at home too.

What you need: cardboard, a whiteboard, a potato chip tube, colored vinyl tape, and marbles.

Build walls around the whiteboard with cardboard, and cut a goal hole in the shorter side wall.

Attach a handle to the tube’s lid with a glue gun to make the mallet.

Make the puck from another lid, placing three marbles inside so it rolls smoothly.

It’s suitable for upper elementary students and should take about an hour to make.

The steps are simple: put jelly clay into a plastic cup, insert a straw, and place a scoop of white clay “ice cream” on top.

The closer it looks to the real thing, the more you might feel disappointed when you remember you can’t actually drink it.

Coasters made with resin

Resin is a fascinating liquid that cures while staying clear once it dries.

Lately, making various small items with resin has become very popular.

It’s easy to do, so it’s recommended even for lower elementary school kids.

Coasters are especially simple, since you just set them in a round shape to harden.

Cute items like flowers and beads are great, of course, and it’s also fun to add seasonal elements like seashells or fallen leaves!

Take a box of the right size, cut out the side that will stick to the wall, and for the bottom, cut it so that about a 1 cm edge remains.

Inside, attach two sheets of construction paper together so they spring open, then stick a magnet onto them and attach drawings of items like a mushroom or a star on top of the magnet.

Embed a magnet in the wall as well, and you’re done.

Enjoy a Question Block you can play with over and over!

Rainstick

Let's make a rainstick with a plastic wrap core!
Rainstick

Do you know what a rainstick is? A rainstick is a musical instrument that originated in Africa, and it looks like a tube.

Inside, it’s filled with things like beans, and when you tilt it sideways it makes a sound that resembles falling rain.

If you’re making one with a cardboard tube (like from a roll of wrapping paper), first make several holes, then attach the bottom and the lid, and pour beans inside.

After you make it, listen closely and let it soothe you.

By the way, if you mix different kinds of beans, the sound becomes even more realistic.

Experimenting with blends is part of the fun.
