For 5-Year-Olds: Let’s Make It! A Collection of Craft Ideas to Feel the Spring

With the arrival of spring and the move up to the next class, the five-year-olds are surely brimming with excitement as they enter their final year at the preschool.

You can see them enjoying themselves—taking on projects with a strong sense of purpose and showing their originality.

This time, we’re introducing spring craft ideas that are perfect for five-year-olds.

We’ve gathered a range from slightly more challenging projects to ideas they can actually play with.

These are activities that five-year-olds will find rewarding to work on.

Teachers, please enjoy them together with the children!

Note: Because children’s creations are treated as works, we use the term “seisaku” in the text to mean “production/creation as a work.”

A cute flower made from one sheet of tissue paper

Here’s how to make a cute flower using just one sheet of tissue paper.

First, fold the tissue paper into an accordion.

Then fold it in half.

After folding, round off the edges with scissors.

Staple the center, and gently open up the flower.

Once it’s opened, press down the center to finish.

You can make lots of flowers to decorate a wall, add leaves to make a bouquet, or cut the edges into points to turn it into a dandelion—there are many ways to arrange them, so give it a try!

Why not try making fluffy butterflies using soft tissue paper? If you use a template, you can easily make them in bulk.

Start by creating a butterfly template with dark-colored tissue paper.

Divide the tissue paper into six equal parts and cut out the template with scissors.

Once cut, stick it onto copier paper and make copies.

Stack several sheets of butterfly tissue paper on top of the copied paper, staple around the edges, and then cut them out along with the template.

After cutting, twist a chenille stem (pipe cleaner) around the center of the butterfly paper to finish.

Bamboo shoots are a hallmark of spring.

Their taste and appearance are irresistible, aren’t they? Many people might even say they’re a favorite.

How about trying to fold bamboo shoots with origami? The steps are relatively simple and quick, so try making several.

They’re fun to stick on the wall, and it’s also enjoyable to fold a basket or bamboo with origami and paste them together as if placing the shoots inside.

Subtly decorating your space with seasonal accents lets you feel Japan’s four seasons even indoors—it’s delightful, isn’t it?

Honeybees and a flower field

Shall we make a spring-themed wall decoration of a flower field with bees flying overhead? First, create a template, place it on yellow origami paper, and make the bee’s body.

Draw the black stripes and face with a black colored pencil or felt-tip pen.

Use the template to make the wings all at once as well.

For the flowers, fold the paper into a circle shape and cut; to add a three-dimensional look, use a pencil to gently curl them.

Vary the cutting style and colors for different flowers to create a rich, varied flower field.

Arrange and glue everything neatly onto a colored construction-paper backing to finish.

Tulips Made with Swipe Art

Let me introduce tulips made with swipe art featuring beautiful patterns.

Prepare paints, a sponge, construction paper, crayons, and round stickers, and let’s get started.

Drip about three colors of paint vertically onto the construction paper.

Use the sponge to swipe the dripped paint horizontally.

By swiping across several times, the colors will blend and create enjoyable patterns.

Cut the paper into a tulip shape and glue it onto a backing sheet, draw the stem, add leaves using round stickers, and you’re done! It makes a great wall display where you can enjoy the color transitions, so give it a try.
