For 5-Year-Olds: Let’s Make It! A Collection of Craft Ideas to Feel the Spring

With the arrival of spring and the move up to the next class, the five-year-olds are surely brimming with excitement as they enter their final year at the preschool.

You can see them enjoying themselves—taking on projects with a strong sense of purpose and showing their originality.

This time, we’re introducing spring craft ideas that are perfect for five-year-olds.

We’ve gathered a range from slightly more challenging projects to ideas they can actually play with.

These are activities that five-year-olds will find rewarding to work on.

Teachers, please enjoy them together with the children!

Note: Because children’s creations are treated as works, we use the term “seisaku” in the text to mean “production/creation as a work.”

Prepare construction paper, glue, and patterned origami paper.

Glue the patterned origami at the center of a circle cut from construction paper.

Make an accordion fold, then fold it in half and glue it so it forms a heart shape.

Make another one the same way, then glue the two hearts together to form a butterfly.

Add antennae to complete your cute butterfly.

Let me introduce a smile flower you can make out of construction paper, featuring an adorable smiling face.

Prepare several colors of construction paper, double-sided tape, scissors, and colored pens.

Cut nine circles out of the construction paper and fold each one in half.

Using colorful paper is recommended because it makes the finished piece look more vibrant.

Apply double-sided tape to the upper back side of each piece, then stick all nine together to form a sphere.

Gently press it open to flatten it into a flower shape.

Once the flower shape is formed, attach circular pieces to the front and back as the flower’s center, and draw the facial expression.

Roll a strip of construction paper to make the stem, attach it along with some leaves, and you’re done.

It’s also fun to play with the colors and arrangement for a unique look.

Colorful Tulips Made from Scrap Materials

Let me introduce colorful tulips made from upcycled materials using toilet paper rolls.

Prepare toilet paper rolls, paint, brushes, and colored pens.

Draw the shape of a tulip on the toilet paper roll with a pen and cut it out.

If you flatten the roll first, it’s easier to draw the design.

Once you’ve painted the tulips with paint, they’re done! Adding patterns inside the tulips can make them feel even more spring-like.

It’s also a great idea to display them in your room to enjoy the spring atmosphere.

Spring hanging scroll

We’ll introduce how to make a spring hanging scroll that brightens up your room with a spring-like touch.

Prepare branches, construction paper, tissue paper, tapioca straws, glue, and scissors.

After choosing the color of the construction paper for the base of the hanging scroll, glue a branch onto white construction paper to set the center of the cherry tree.

Glue tissue paper onto circles cut from construction paper, then attach them around the branch.

By using pink for the cherry blossoms and green for the leaves as they start to appear, you can express the changing of the seasons.

Glue tapioca straws to the top and bottom of the hanging scroll, thread a string through, and it’s complete! It’s also great for spring wall displays.

Let’s paint spring with fluffy paints.

Introducing fluffy paint for drawing springtime art that makes you want to touch the puffy parts.

Prepare shaving foam, liquid laundry glue, paint, plastic cups, plastic spoons, and drawing paper.

Sketch your picture on the paper beforehand.

In a plastic cup, combine shaving foam and liquid glue in a 1:1 ratio and mix.

Add paint to color it, then use a plastic spoon to place the foamy paint onto your sketched drawing.

When it dries, you’ll have a cute, puffy spring picture! Once dry, you can touch it, so enjoy the fun texture—give this charming and magical craft a try!

Hanging decorations of the Sakura Dome

Introducing a hanging Sakura dome decoration, perfect for spring with its gently swaying pink hues.

Prepare a dome-shaped paper plate, tissue paper, curling ribbon, ribbon for hanging, origami paper, glue, and tape.

Glue torn pieces of tissue paper onto the paper plate, making sure there are no gaps.

Cut the curling ribbon and attach the strips to the inside of the paper plate, leaving small spaces between them.

Punch a hole in the center of the plate and thread the hanging ribbon through it.

Cut sakura shapes out of origami paper and stick them onto the front of the plate.

Your soft, spring-like hanging decoration is complete!

Hanging weeping cherry (branch)

Hanging weeping cherry (branch)

Great for events too! Let me share an idea for a hanging weeping cherry blossom decoration.

You’ll need a clear plastic umbrella, string, tape, glue, a stapler, scissors, pink tissue paper, and light pink tissue paper.

First, use the two colors of tissue paper to make cherry blossoms.

If you trim them into a forked shape with scissors, you can capture the characteristic look of cherry blossom petals! Next, glue the tissue paper blossoms onto the string.

Finally, tape them to the clear umbrella and you’re done.

It’s portable too, so give it a try!
