[For Seniors] Fun Spring Recreational Activities: A Collection of Games and Play Ideas

Spring brings more warm days, with cherry blossoms blooming and trees putting on fresh green leaves—it’s the kind of season that makes you want to go out.

In this article, we introduce fun spring activities and games for older adults.

Daycare centers and senior facilities also offer more spring-themed recreation, don’t they? Even without going outside, there are plenty of activities and recreational games you can enjoy indoors while sitting, basking in the gentle spring sunlight.

Try enjoying spring in various ways.

Onigiri Kororin Game

This activity is awesome! So much fun for everyone! Everyone gets excited! The Onigiri Rolling Game 🍙 #dayservice #elderlyrecreation #senior #rehabilitation #daycare #shorts #grandma #onigiri #game

How about trying the sure-to-be-exciting “Rolling Rice Ball Game”? Attach yarn to a paper plate and make rice balls and obstacles.

Place the rice balls you made on the paper plate and start the game! Reel in the yarn, and if you can bring the rice ball all the way to you without dropping it, you succeed.

There are obstacles made from plastic wrap or construction paper along the way, so be careful not to let it fall! The winner is decided both by speed and by how many rice balls you can transport without dropping them.

It’s a recreation activity that gets not only the older adults pulling the string excited, but also everyone watching around them.

Please feel free to use this as a reference!

Fluffy ball

Let’s have fun with a game where you compete for points using balloons.

Inflate a balloon and tie a string to it with a weight attached to the end.

Before you start, write point values on the floor.

Aim for the spaces with the written points and throw the balloon.

The person who scores the most points wins.

The trick seems to be to swing the weight firmly as you throw the balloon.

Throwing the balloon can also be an effective workout for the upper body and arms.

Since balloons aren’t very heavy, there’s little risk of injury if they’re dropped, which is nice.

Marble Shoot

Marble Shoot

How about a nostalgic marble game? Set up a long table and build walls at both ends so the marbles don’t fall off.

Create a tunnel out of construction paper and place it at one end, then have participants roll marbles from the opposite side, aiming to send them through the tunnel.

You can vary the rules—specify the number of marbles, or see how many can pass through within a time limit—to keep things fun.

Along with trying a new twist on the game, it might spark conversations like, “This is how we played when we were kids.” Give it a try!

Dropping Colored Balls

Dropping Colored Balls

We would like to introduce a color ball drop activity for pairs.

Have two older adults sit facing each other, each holding two sticks by their tips.

Place baskets labeled with colors between them.

Roll balls along the sticks and drop each ball into the basket with the matching color label.

This game emphasizes cooperation between the two participants.

Encourage them to communicate and synchronize their movements.

It’s a fun activity that can spark conversation and help expand social connections.

Hinamatsuri Bag Toss Game

Hinamatsuri Bag Toss Game

Attach illustrations of the Ohinasama and Odairisama to plastic bottles, then cover them with bags.

At the start signal, participants use uchiwa fans to send air and blow the bags off the bottles.

Prepare several bottles, and make the rule that the person who removes all their bags first wins.

Bags won’t fly off if you fan them from the front, so the key is how well you strike the fan against the table to send air from below.

Also, be careful: if you don’t send air continuously, the bags will fall back down.

Indoor walking

Indoor Walking [Aerobics] Easy even for seniors♪ No need to worry about weather or seasons! Let’s take a stroll inside your home! Stay lively, healthy, and live long with aerobic exercise☆
Indoor walking

As April arrives, there will likely be more days with warm, pleasant weather.

Older adults may feel like getting their bodies moving.

With that in mind, here’s an easy indoor walking activity.

Try marching in place while swinging your arms wide, or extend both hands forward and do light punching motions.

It’s also an aerobic exercise, which can help improve cardiovascular function and relieve stress.

Since it’s indoors, you can do it even on rainy days or when it’s cold.

Playing music while you exercise is recommended, too.

Please try it together with an older adult.

Hinamatsuri Target Game

Hinamatsuri Target Game

It’s a game where you throw balls at a target inspired by a tiered hina-dan display.

Hula hoops are used for the target’s frames, and they’re covered with tape that makes the balls stick.

On the tape are illustrations of the Ohinasama (Empress), Odairisama (Emperor), the three court ladies, and the five musicians, and it seems the score varies depending on where you hit.

As expected, the tape beneath the Empress and Emperor likely yields higher points…

It’s a game everyone can enjoy, letting you get moving while soaking up the Hinamatsuri spirit!
