Cherry trees are plants in the rose family (Rosaceae). More precisely, they belong to the genus Prunus, subfamily Amygdaloideae, within Rosaceae. Incidentally, plants that herald the arrival of spring—such as plum and peach—are also classified in the rose family. Many fruit-bearing plants, including strawberries and apples, are likewise classified in Rosaceae.

It’s said that you shouldn’t cut cherry tree branches, because fungi can enter through the cut surface and make the tree more susceptible to disease. Incidentally, there’s a proverb that clearly expresses this: “A fool cuts a cherry tree, and a fool doesn’t cut a plum tree.” True to the proverb, unlike cherries, if you don’t prune plum trees, their branches will grow too densely.
