windmill

[Plastic Bottle Craft] “Spinning Pinwheel” Spins Great! Also Works as a Bird Deterrent!
windmill

Let’s make a windmill from a plastic bottle that also works as a bird deterrent! Cut the plastic bottle, and use an awl to make holes in the cap and the bottom of the bottle.

Draw lines for the blade sections with a pen, then cut along the lines with scissors and fold them out.

Color the blades with permanent markers in any colors you like.

Next, cut a wire hanger and straighten it into one long rod, then thread it through the holes you made first.

Finally, slide a straw onto the wire, bend the wire 90 degrees with pliers, and curl the tip of the wire—done! Check that the bottle spins smoothly around the wire axle.

If it doesn’t spin, make sure the wire isn’t bent and that the holes aren’t too small.

Place it outside and enjoy your windmill fluttering in the breeze!

Lantern

Lantern

A lantern that gently carries light from the inside to the outside—this is a craft that makes use of a plastic bottle’s transparency.

Cut off the top and bottom of the bottle, then add various decorations to the middle cylindrical section to bring out the light.

Using white paper to wrap the parts, attach motifs cut from black construction paper so the patterns emerge like shadow play.

Once the bottle parts are finished, place them over a candle or other light source to complete the lantern.

It’s also a good idea to consider the balance of the decorations according to the position of the light.

Here’s an idea for an easy wind chime you can make with a plastic bottle.

Cut the bottle in half across the middle and make a hole in the center of the bottom piece.

Thread a string through the hole, attaching a strip of paper (tanzaku) and a bell to it.

Decorate the bottle, and you’re done.

Pens, nail polish, and decorative parts work well for embellishment.

To keep the string from slipping out, tie a short piece of a toothpick along the string as a stopper.

By taking advantage of the bottle’s translucence, you’ll get a cool, refreshing look.
