Many adults enjoy making food replicas as a hobby! If you make them at home with family or friends during summer vacation, you’re sure to get hooked by how fun it is.

Food replicas can seem tricky because of handling wax or inks, but you can use gel candles from a 100-yen shop: remove the candle from its container, melt it, pour it back into the container with parts that look like ice, and chill it—before you know it, you’ve got a drink-themed food replica.

Float “ice cream” made from silicone adhesive on top to make a cream soda, too! Give it a try.

Summer is the season that makes you crave ice cream, and as you eat it, you might find the boxes piling up.

This idea uses those leftover ice cream boxes to make a marble run.

Use a large box, like a milk carton, as the base, and attach slopes made by cutting the ice cream boxes around it.

Adjust the angles and heights carefully, keeping in mind the strength needed so it won’t break when the marbles hit.

Using ice cream sticks to reinforce it is also recommended—they’ll make the whole thing sturdier and give it a cohesive look.

cardboard safe

[Cardboard Craft] Opens with a card! Cardboard Safe!
cardboard safe

Introducing a cardboard safe that won’t open unless you insert a card! The materials are wooden boards, thick paper, bamboo skewers, and so on.

If you don’t have thick paper, cardboard will work as a substitute.

You’ll also need scissors or a utility knife to cut the thick paper, wood glue to attach the wooden boards and thick paper, and a saw to shape the wooden boards as needed.

The safe itself is just a regular box, but the key part is the card-insertion mechanism on top.

It uses a lever principle for the trick.

Since it requires precise planning, it’s recommended for upper elementary school students.

It’s hard to finish in a single day, but the sense of accomplishment when you complete it is guaranteed! Give it a try!

Let’s make cute, summery, translucent gel candles! You’ll need a heat-resistant glass, gel candle wax, a candle wick, and decorations.

You can buy everything at a 100-yen shop.

First, pour a little gel candle wax into the heat-resistant glass and stand the wick in the center by holding it with chopsticks.

Next, add your favorite decorations, then more gel candle wax in that order.

Once the gel candle wax has set, trim the excess wick and you’re done! Gel candle wax comes in various colors, so layering different colors alternately creates a beautiful gradient.

You can express all kinds of worlds depending on the decorations you add!

Craft ideas made with origami and a shredder

Let’s use the shredding function that cuts paper into fine strips to create various shapes.

We’ll use a hand-crank shredder, and by controlling where you stop shredding and other small tricks, you can make different parts and combine them.

Food motifs are an easy example: if you insert long, thin strips sideways and shred them even finer, they can look like a coating or breading; roll up long, thin strips and they’ll resemble shredded cabbage.

By layering parts and experimenting with how you bend them, you can also add a sense of three-dimensionality.

Think carefully about how to reproduce what you want to make.

Spinning piggy bank

Why not make a fun piggy bank where the coins spin as they go in? It’s a perfect idea for a summer vacation craft.

First, slice a milk carton into rings, press the corners to flatten the center space, and make four “blades” to form a propeller.

Decorate the edges with vinyl tape, and make two large propellers and four small ones in the same way.

Skewer a large propeller on a bamboo stick, then add two small propellers on each side to create a spinning mechanism.

Insert this into a clear tube, make a coin slot in the lid, put the lid on, and you’re done.

Fuzzy Navel – Conton Candy

Here’s an idea for making a spinning top you blow on using a milk carton.

First, cut the carton about 1.5 cm up from the bottom, then make slits at the four corners and open it up.

Next, rotating the carton in a consistent direction from each corner, cut along the edges of the bottom.

Leave about 1 cm uncut at the ends.

Bend the sections you just cut inward so they gather toward the center, and decorate with masking tape or stickers to finish.

If you blow straight down from above, it will spin around and around.
