SO BAD BOYBY-SEXUAL

This is a band whose flashy hair colors make a big impact.
They also sang the theme song for the movie Bakumatsu Junjoden, starring Riho Makise, but despite their high name recognition, they weren’t blessed with many hit songs.
They took part in VISUAL JAPAN SUMMIT 2016, reunited, and although irregularly, they are still active today.
Boy Meets GirlJUSTY NASTY
Formed around vocalist Kenichi Fujisaki.
Unusually for visual kei at the time (perhaps?), many of their songs have a calm tone.
The vocalist has a distinctive style, but in the bands he joined afterward, his singing changed to something less idiosyncratic.
They reunited in 2015.
lipsGLAY

A masterpiece that sensually portrays a heartrending love, it skillfully depicts emotions swaying between passion and desire.
This gem of a song fuses the protagonist’s irrepressible impulses with a foreboding sense of love’s transience.
Released in May 1997 by GLAY, it was used as the ending theme for Fuji TV’s music program “HEY! HEY! HEY! MUSIC CHAMP” and reached No.
1 on the Oricon singles chart.
In the fall of that year, it was also included on the acclaimed album “REVIEW – BEST OF GLAY.” It resonates deeply when you want to unleash the passion hidden in your heart or when your feelings for someone special are growing stronger.
The powerful performance and emotional vocals create a world that gently embraces not only rock fans but also anyone struggling with love.
DESIRELUNA SEA

A quintessential hit from the 1990s that passionately sings of love.
This powerful track encapsulates LUNA SEA’s aggressive stance and bold new challenges.
Released in November 1995, it reached No.
1 on the Oricon singles chart, stayed on the charts for an extended period, and became one of the band’s top-selling songs.
The lyrics, depicting fierce, profound love along with the accompanying anguish and resolve, resonate deeply with listeners.
Recommended for those who want to connect with the pounding excitement and bittersweet feelings of being in love.

Darlin’D’ERLANGER

If we’re talking about a cool, gritty band that even young people should listen to, it’s got to be D’ERLANGER! Influenced by powerful vocals and songs like “Darlin’,” quite a few bands are still active today.
Have you ever heard a love song with such a strong, intense vibe? It’s not overly dark, and it has that unmistakable visual kei feel.
The repeatedly echoed lyrics will definitely stick in your head.
No doubt it’s a shocking, unforgettable track.
In conclusion
Even when we simply say “’90s visual kei rock,” there were all kinds of bands—from metal/hard rock-leaning groups like X at the forefront, to the boom-era darlings who debuted in the mid-’90s, and the bands that debuted in the late ’90s, survived the visual kei winter, and are still active today.
I bet even younger listeners who like today’s visual kei found some tracks they think are cool.
It’s also fun to dig up the classic songs from back then that became the roots for younger bands!
