[Taking on a song with a wide vocal range] An S-class challenge track

Have you ever had a song you wanted to sing at karaoke, only to give up because the vocal range was too wide? Songs that span three octaves or feature virtuosic techniques rated at difficulty S are certainly challenging to master.

But if you understand their appeal and learn some vocal tips, you’ll find more joy in taking on the challenge.

In this article, we focus on popular songs known for their wide ranges and highlight key points to keep in mind when singing them at karaoke.

Use it as a guide to make your karaoke life even more fulfilling!

[Challenging Songs with a Wide Vocal Range] S-Rank Difficulty Challenge Tracks (111–120)

#2601Mr.Children

When it comes to Mr.Children, their orthodox J-pop sound is what usually stands out, but they also have some hardcore tracks.

Among those, the one I especially recommend as a particularly difficult song is “#2601.” It spans a very wide range from mid1 C-sharp to high A-sharp, and on top of that, most of the chorus sits on high A-sharp.

What’s more, it’s not sung in falsetto, but in full-voice shouts, so unless your throat is exceptionally strong, it will be hard to pull off.

Among Mr.Children’s songs, Whistle boasts one of the widest vocal ranges.

Its highest note is hi A, and astonishingly, the lowest is low G! While that top note is a common peak in other Mr.Children tracks, the contrast with the lowest note makes this piece quite challenging.

Fortunately, the tempo itself is very relaxed, so the pitch movement isn’t too abrupt.

However, since you can’t really lower the key much, depending on your vocal range you may need to tackle the high parts on your own.

UnsizerONE OK ROCK

ONE OK ROCK “アンサイズニア” → “Anxiety” (commonly rendered as “An Sizunia/Ansanity,” but the official English title used by the band is “Anxiety”).

ONE OK ROCK boasts immense popularity as a modern rock band.

Their song “Answer is Near” is quite difficult to sing because of its fast tempo and the strong vocal projection it requires.

Like their signature tracks “The Beginning” and “Kanzen Kankaku Dreamer,” the high-energy, racing chorus seems to demand a lot of stamina.

The song also sits in a high key overall, so you’ll likely need solid practice to make it through without your voice giving out.

Be careful not to strain your throat and give it a try!

Singer-songwriter Fujii Kaze, who wields catchy pop music with an R&B flair, has earned strong support from many fans.

Because his work incorporates R&B elements, every song carries a fair level of difficulty.

Among his tracks, the one I particularly recommend is Hana.

While this piece doesn’t span an exceptionally wide vocal range, it repeatedly requires low-register falsetto, which can make it feel as challenging to sing as a song with a very wide range.

iri is a female R&B singer-songwriter known for her stylish musicality.

Among Japanese female singers, she has a notably low vocal timbre.

When people think of songs with a wide vocal range, they might picture singers with high voices, but artists with lower voices often have significant dips as well, which naturally leads to a broader range.

This track is one such example: in addition to high phrases, it also features distinctly low phrases, making it a song with a quite wide range.

With strong Western pop influences, it’s also a piece that’s difficult to deliver in a straightforward, simple manner.
