Tokaido

Even University of Tokyo students fall for the 10-times quiz theory
Tokaido

Mr.

Takushi Izawa and other University of Tokyo students and alumni are really doing amazing work on TV, aren’t they? This is a fun question that also appeared in a video uploaded to a video site called “Even Todai Students Get Tripped Up by the 10-Times Quiz.” First, you say, “Try saying ‘Tokaido’ ten times.” The follow-up question is: “Which prefecture is the northernmost in Japan?” Because you’re primed by the sound of “Tokaido,” you end up blurting out “Hokkaido.” The correct answer is Aomori Prefecture.

Hokkaido is a “dō” (a circuit) and not a “ken” (prefecture).

It’s a really well-crafted question.

[10 Times Quiz 1] 13 Questions! Tricky 10-times riddles that everyone gets caught by!
1+1=2

Here’s a playful “10-time quiz” in arithmetic that brings out your inner child.

You say to the other person, “Try saying ‘1 + 1 = 2’ ten times.” Then you ask the question: “What is 1 + 1 × 2?” After repeating the 1 + 1 calculation in their head ten times, they forget the basic rule of arithmetic that you must do multiplication first, and they answer “4.” It’s the kind of trick you might notice if it were written on paper, but when asked out loud, your attention doesn’t quite get there.

Even people who are good at math get caught by it!

hot spring

[10 Times Quiz] 15 questions for the 10 Times Quiz! How many can you answer?
hot spring

You know how you sometimes go to a hot spring with friends? Or soak together during a retreat or training trip? There’s a classic “say it 10 times” quiz that always gets people in those moments.

While your friend is relaxing in the bath, you say, “Try saying ‘onsen’ ten times.” Then you ask the question: “What comes after 3000?” Because they’re primed by “sanzen” (3000), they often blurt out “4000.” Of course, the correct answer is “3001.” The trick works well because the intonation of “onsen” and “yonsen” (4000) is similar.

Give it a try during your next fun hot spring visit!

The great thing about the 10-times quiz is that anyone can enjoy it, regardless of age or gender.

It’s also a fun way to break the ice and get closer to people.

Here’s a classic question that’s been around since the early days of the 10-times quiz: You start with “Say ‘goma’ ten times,” and then follow up with, “Okay, what do you call an old man’s child?” Because the person’s mind is stuck on ‘goma,’ they often end up answering ‘mago’ (grandchild) by mistake.

It’s a classic, but it still trips people up quite a lot, which makes it fun! The correct answer is “child.” Try it out with grandpas and grandmas at events like senior gatherings!

pheasant

[Ota Ueda #71] We had a showdown with the 10-times quiz
pheasant

Do you know the YouTube channel “Ota Ueda”? It features Ota from Bakusho Mondai and Ueda from Cream Stew.

Here’s a riddle on the show that had Ota bursting into laughter: after asking someone to say “kiji” (pheasant) ten times, the question is “So, who did Momotaro meet first?” Many people jump to answer, “Not the pheasant—oh, the dog!” But the correct answer is “the old man and the old woman.” The key is that it’s not asking “Who was the first companion?” There are other ‘say it ten times’ quizzes in the same video too—check it out!

Everest

A 10-times quiz that a University of Tokyo student spent a week making—bet everyone in the country will fall for it
Everest

The “say it 10 times” quiz is all about outwitting someone’s expectations—and then outwitting the outwit—so it could go on forever.

When someone says, “Say ‘Everest’ ten times,” you naturally think, “This must be about mountain names.” Then if they ask, “What’s the mnemonic for root 2?” you’re primed to think of a mountain and blurt out, “Fuji-sanroku ni ōmu naku” (Parrots cry at the foot of Mt.

Fuji)! But that’s actually the mnemonic for root 5.

It’s a clever question that aims for the double-bluff.

The catch is, this only works with people who know a bunch of square root mnemonics, so maybe it’s for high schoolers and up? By the way, the mnemonic for root 2 is “Hitoyo hito-yo ni hito-mi-goro” (Best to behold once in a lifetime).

campus

There are certain words that instantly take you back to childhood just by hearing them—like music room, after-school, or school lunch.

Here’s a 10-times quiz about such words: “Say ‘campus’ ten times.” After “Campus, campus, campus…” you’re asked, “What’s the stationery used to measure angles?” and you end up blurting out “compass” and getting tricked.

Maybe the “-pus” in ‘campus’ makes you think of ‘compass.’ But the correct answer is “protractor.” It’s the kind of riddle that makes you smile even when you get tripped up.
