[Part 2] Easy DIY Halloween Costumes
Speaking of Halloween, dressing up in costumes is a classic! Some people put on elaborate outfits or cosplay as popular characters, and the event seems to get more exciting every year.
While there are store-bought costumes, many people consider making their own because they can’t find what they want or the prices are too high.
In this article, we’ll introduce Halloween costumes that are easy to make! None of the outfits take much effort, and they’re all super cute.
Try making them for yourself and for your kids, too!
[Part 2] Easy DIY Halloween Costumes (1–10)
pumpkin pants
These are cute, fluffy, pumpkin-like pants with a soft, puffy shape.
They’re made using a 70 cm × 60 cm piece of felt.
The design is very simple and easy to make, but you might lose track of the right and wrong sides partway through, so it’s a good idea to mark them beforehand.
Also, when creating the puffy sections, be careful not to gather the fabric too tightly.
Even if you make them quite large, they surprisingly still fit well, so it’s better to err on the side of a roomy size.
Guri and Gura
These are costumes from the famous picture book “Guri and Gura” by Rieko Nakagawa and Yuriko Yamawaki.
In the book, they’re probably wearing worker-style patch overalls typically used for farm work or gardening.
If you make each one from a single color of felt and finish it so the seams don’t show, you’ll get an adorable design just like in the picture book.
For the hats, start with a simple cone shape and add ears; if you fold back the part where you attach the ears, they’ll look more three-dimensional and animal-like—highly recommended.
The props—baskets, shovels, brooms, and other basic gardening items—are relatively easy to gather.
Holding flowers, for example, can enhance the vibe and make it even more fun.
Anya (SPY×FAMILY)
This is an adorable outfit inspired by Anya from the popular web manga on Shonen Jump+, SPY×FAMILY.
The design is quite elaborate, but you can make it using only items from a 100-yen shop.
If you draw the patterns with a template before you start sewing, it will come out even cleaner.
It’s surprising how easy it is to create a traditional Gothic-style shape just by using hook-and-loop fasteners.
And speaking of Anya, you can’t forget her head accessories! For those, use a template to form a cone and fill it with stuffing—just be careful not to overstuff it.
Minnie Mouse
This is a Disney movie Cinderella costume made from colored plastic bags using white and light blue.
In addition to vinyl tape and double-sided tape, having silver tape will help you create an even prettier costume.
There is extra room at the waist and shoulders.
First fasten with double-sided tape, then use vinyl tape as needed.
Be careful, as some parts are taped from the outside and others from the inside.
Changing the color or pattern of the tape will give you variations.
Pair it with a light blue headband for an extra cute look!
Snow White
You can make that costume from Disney’s Snow White just by using light blue and yellow plastic bags for packing and organizing.
It’s super easy because you can finish it without sewing—just use duct tape or double-sided tape.
For a more authentic design, try gold tape or polka-dot masking tape.
The bodice and shoulder parts are attached separately, so adjust the shoulder pieces to the right angle before sticking them on.
You can also design the waistband of the skirt simply by taping it in place.
Witch’s Dress
Here’s how to make a witch dress for Halloween.
Prepare tulle, a purple fabric skirt, the front bodice, the back bodice, snap buttons, and lace.
Place the front and back bodice pieces right sides together and sew at the shoulders and side seams.
Make two sets—outer and lining—then sew them together to create the bodice.
Attach gathered lace to the sleeves using a gathering stitch on the lace.
This lace is the key detail that enhances the costume’s cuteness! Sew the tulle onto the base skirt, then attach the skirt to the bodice.
Finish by fastening snap buttons at the center back, and you’re done.
Pretty Cure
Introducing a Pretty Cure costume with an adorable oversized ribbon.
Place a clear file over your child’s clothing to trace the shape, then transfer that outline onto thin paper to create a pattern.
At this stage, add details like frilled sleeves, collar, and ribbon to the pattern according to your design.
Once the pattern is ready, cut out the pieces from your chosen fabric and start sewing them together.
Tips to make the costume extra cute: sew lace curtain fabric to the inside of the skirt for a fluffy finish, and use a resin-made heart for the ribbon embellishment on the chest.
Using resin makes it look like a real gemstone.

Mario’s pants

Cut two yellow felt circles the size of 4 cm buttons, and cut Mario’s bib, pants, and two shoulder straps from the blue felt to fit your child.
Sew the two pant pieces together, then sew the waistband and insert the elastic.
While stretching the elasticized waistband, use the sewing machine to attach the bib to the pants, and then sew the two shoulder straps onto the bib.
Finally, glue on the yellow “buttons,” and your Mario costume is complete!
Cardboard Mickey headband

First, prepare black cardstock.
Fold one sheet into a long, narrow strip to make the base of the headband.
From another sheet, cut out two circular pieces.
Make a small slit in each circle, overlap the cut edges slightly, and glue them to create a three-dimensional piece.
Attach these as ears to the headband base.
Finally, punch holes at both ends of the base, thread a rubber band through, and you’ll have an adorable headband! Add a bow to turn it into a Minnie version.
Toy Story headband
Here’s a fun idea for anyone who loves Disney: Toy Story-themed headbands you can make with materials from a 100-yen shop! Decorate foam ear bases with designs inspired by characters from Toy Story.
You’ll use items like felt, rhinestone stickers, and embroidery thread, but feel free to choose materials that fit your design.
Since layered felt can get heavy, lighten it by cutting away the lower layers where they overlap.
Use a hot glue gun for assembly, and be careful to avoid burns.
