Country RoadHon’na Yoko

Country Road - Studio Ghibli “Whisper of the Heart”
Country RoadHon'na Yoko

The theme song “Country Road” from the animated film Whisper of the Heart, produced and released by Studio Ghibli in 1995, is a masterpiece whose nostalgic, familiar melody and the gentle timbre of Youko Honna’s voice resonate deeply.

In fact, it’s a Japanese cover of “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” a song by the renowned American country singer-songwriter John Denver, yet its melody somehow strikes a special chord with Japanese listeners.

Some people first encountered “Country Road” when they saw the film in their youth and now, as adults, feel inspired to try playing it on the piano.

For pop-style solo piano, there are many beginner-friendly scores, and Ghibli theme songs in particular offer a wealth of arrangements; since many of the tunes are widely known, they’re a great choice for beginners.

The very straightforward melodic line can be learned quickly with just the right hand, and it’s also well-suited for practicing two-handed piano playing.

If you’re not particular about using the original key, choosing sheet music in C major makes reading easier and the piece more comfortable to play.

Bach French Suite No.2 “Courante” (take 4) P. Barton, FEURICH 133 piano
French Suite No. 2, BWV 813 – CouranteJ.S.Bach

Among the French Suites, this piece is filled with dance-like charm, distinguished by its elegant triple meter and flowing melody.

Composed between 1722 and 1725, it is a Baroque masterpiece that blends French and Italian dance styles into a refined work.

Though it has no lyrics, the music itself speaks, and its expressive, richly contoured melody conjures images of graceful courtly dances.

Despite its relaxed tempo, it weaves in complex rhythms, making it recommended both for those aiming to develop performance technique and theoretical understanding, and for listeners who want to savor the allure of Baroque music.

Composed for educational purposes, it combines ease of playing with artistic depth.

Love is a flower, and you are its seed.Amanda McBroom

Many people were likely moved by the deeply resonant vocals that play over the ending of the film “Only Yesterday.” The song is widely known through Bette Midler’s performance and won a Golden Globe in 1980.

While comparing love to harsh things like a river and a knife, it ultimately portrays it as a hopeful flower—a truly wonderful, universal message.

The melody line is exceptionally beautiful, so even with simple accompaniment, you can fully savor the warm world the piece embodies.

The key is a relaxed tempo, playing the melody with tenderness.

By putting your heart into each and every note, you’ll create a rich performance that resonates deeply with listeners.

Melody Op. 4-2Fanny Mendelssohn

Fanny Mendelssohn: Melody Op. 4-2 [08_Dark and sorrowful classical piano piece with sheet music and commentary]
Melody Op. 4-2Fanny Mendelssohn

A short piece in C-sharp minor, notable for its melody that sings as if it were a song.

This work is included in Fanny Mendelssohn’s piano collection “6 Melodies, Op.

4,” in which she explored a distinctive pianistic style different from her brother Felix’s.

The dense harmonies layered over the delicate melody are quintessentially Fanny Mendelssohn, conveying a nuanced emotional sensitivity; even the slightest misjudgment in expression can risk diminishing the piece’s introspective allure.

Published under her own name in 1846, it quietly yet unmistakably reveals her firm resolve.

It is a piece one would especially want to savor alone on a night when one wishes to sink deeply into sorrow.

When performing it, the paramount key is how you make the melody sing.

How about forgetting the summer heat with the cool tones of the piano? This is a beautiful miniature by the Finnish composer Heino Kaski.

Each piano note feels like a grain of light shimmering along a nighttime shoreline, gently leading your heart into the serene nature of the Nordic landscape.

Its calm, dreamlike melody tenderly envelops the listener, inviting a reflective mood.

Performed by pianist Izumi Tateno and recorded in April 1999, the piece gained wide recognition through the album “Kaski: Night By the Sea.” It’s a work I highly recommend to anyone seeking a soothing companion for a heat-weary heart and a moment of refreshing coolness.
