Let’s try making the Super Sea Snail—an item you can get as a Splatfest reward in the shooting game Splatoon—out of clay! Its shape is just like a real sea snail, with a spiral shell and little horns.

First, stack several oval-shaped pieces of different sizes to form the shell, then attach the horns.

You’ll be drawing the face at the very bottom of the oval stack, so decide that spot ahead of time.

After painting the whole thing blue, use green and purple paint to add patterns.

Finish by drawing the face, and you’re done! It might make a perfect summer decoration, too.

How about making a “green bell pepper” as a simple clay project? At first glance it looks smooth, but it actually has ridges at the top and bottom and a surprisingly complex shape.

Start with a lump of clay the same size as a bell pepper, and gradually carve it to form the shape.

Once the form is done, let it dry and paint it.

Use green, white, black, and yellow to capture the pepper’s glossy surface.

If you place a real bell pepper next to you while you work, it’ll be easier to notice the differences in light and dark tones, even within the same green.
