Chatmonchy’s iconic and popular songs

I’ve put together a collection of songs by Chatmonchy, one of Japan’s leading all-girl bands.

For me, born in 1993, when I think of girl bands, it’s definitely Chatmonchy.

They had been active as a trio since their formation, but in 2011, drummer Kumikon (Kumiko Takahashi) left the band.

Since then, the group has continued with vocalist/guitarist Ecchan (Eriko Hashimoto) and bassist Akko-chan (Akiko Fukuoka), performing with support members.

By the way, after leaving, Kumikon has been working as a writer, which she had been doing for some time, creating works that use paintings and poetry to turn entire spaces into art—this is her guiding concept.

She also wrote lyrics for many of their songs, so be sure to check them out in this playlist.

It was a song that captures an adorably sweet crush—the kind that makes you grin until it almost feels ticklish.

I’m sure many women can relate to it.

I’d highly recommend it to anyone who’s shy about love.

If you hum the lyrics, I think they’ll resonate with you even more.

ambiguous feelingsChatto Monchī

I felt that this song is about someone lonely, recalling memories of a lover they’ve broken up with.

When I listen to it, a story comes to mind, making it easy to understand the song.

It’s lonely and heartbreaking, yet somehow it makes me feel a bit hopeful.

I never thought we would part and had never even considered the possibility, yet the breakup came anyway.

The lyrics, capturing the turmoil and sadness of that moment and looking back on all the happy memories we shared, were so heartrending they made my chest tighten a little.

I could feel, almost painfully, how much they still love them.

This is the track that was unveiled alongside the shocking announcement of a male support member joining.

No one could have imagined that Chatmonchy, who had been at the forefront of girls’ bands, would have a man take part and perform live with them.

Even so, you can feel Chatmonchy’s “present,” where their music has matured even further without losing what makes them who they are.

Goodbye goodbyeChatto Monchī

I thought it was a song about losing someone you love dearly.

It felt like it was singing about the sadness of not being able to see that important person anymore, and listening to it made me feel incredibly heartbroken.

I also felt it was a song that makes you think, “I wish I could love someone that deeply.”

flutter; thrill; a heart-pounding feelingChatto Monchī

Because it sings about the complicated feelings of being in love, and the melody is gentle and slow, I was able to listen while reflecting on the meaning of the lyrics.

The instrumental break gave me time to think more deeply, and just as I found myself going, “I see, that’s how it is,” the vocals came in, as if the song were offering me the answer.

The world it creates is incredible, and I was surprised to think, “Is this really Chatmonchy?” I don’t usually listen to band music, but Chatmonchy’s songs are very easy to listen to, and the lyrics come across so directly that I love them.

This song gives me a boost when I listen to it on days I’m feeling down.
