I’ve put together a collection of songs by Chatmonchy, one of Japan’s leading all-girl bands.
For me, born in 1993, when I think of girl bands, it’s definitely Chatmonchy.
They had been active as a trio since their formation, but in 2011, drummer Kumikon (Kumiko Takahashi) left the band.
Since then, the group has continued with vocalist/guitarist Ecchan (Eriko Hashimoto) and bassist Akko-chan (Akiko Fukuoka), performing with support members.
By the way, after leaving, Kumikon has been working as a writer, which she had been doing for some time, creating works that use paintings and poetry to turn entire spaces into art—this is her guiding concept.

Chatmonchy’s eighth single is a catchy rock tune that captures the exhilaration and confusion at the start of love.
Released in June 2008 as the theme song for Shiseido’s “SEA BREEZE” commercial, it won over fans’ hearts.
Though disliking effort, the lyrics portray a heart that starts to run for love, expressed through Eriko Hashimoto’s delicate yet powerful vocals.
The image of moving toward love as if pushed forward by the wind is striking.
Packed with the bittersweetness of youth, this song gently gives courage to those troubled by love.
It’s especially recommended for the fresh seasons of spring and summer.
Smoke of LoveChatto Monchī
It feels like I can almost reach the dream I’ve dreamed of—that lyric is something I really love.
I thought it was the kind of song that sticks in your head after just one listen.
Even though it has a strong rock vibe, it still has a girlish charm that I found cute.
Listening to this song made me really feel that Chatmonchy is cool yet cute.
Midnight Amusement ParkChatto Monchī
It’s an incredibly powerful, rockin’ number.
Even so, it doesn’t lose its girlish charm—that’s part of the appeal.
And the sense to bring the biggest climax in the lyrics to “Headlight” is unmistakably the mark of a true rock star.

This song really resonates deeply with me.
The A-melody sticks in your head and makes you want to listen to it over and over.
The lyrics might feel a bit heavy, but as you listen, they really make you think about a lot of things.

I felt like it was a song that puts you in a strange mood.
Maybe the lyrics—like “if I were God” or “if I were the devil”—make me feel that way even more.
For some reason, when I listen to this song, I feel strength well up inside me and it makes me want to take another look at myself.

Some of you may have heard this song, which was used as the 2016 commercial theme for Osaka Isen, Nagoya Isen, and Shuto Ikou.
It includes a line like, “I want the same things as everyone else, but I also want something different,” which many people can probably relate to.
The tempo is relaxed, yet it’s a song that makes you feel as if you’re being gently encouraged.
