The Game of Life

The Game of Life

Many of you might not have played it since you were kids, right? When you think of The Game of Life, it’s that board game where you spin a roulette, move forward and back on the spaces, and ultimately aim to become a millionaire.

By the way, did you know there are many different versions of The Game of Life? There are some interesting ones, like versions themed around time slips.

Paper Balloon Battle

Paper Balloon Battle

It’s a game where you place a paper balloon on your head secured with something like a headband, and try to pop your opponent’s paper balloon using a soft sponge or a plastic bat that won’t hurt even if it hits someone.

The person whose balloon doesn’t get popped wins.

You can run it as an individual knockout competition, or make it a team match for a fun group game.

Don Janken

Didn’t you play this as a kid? You split into two teams and line up on opposite sides of a straight line.

At the starting signal, everyone runs along the line, and when you meet an opponent, you press both hands together, say “Don!” and then play rock-paper-scissors.

The loser yields the path and goes to the back of their team’s line.

The team that manages to advance and reach the opponent’s side wins.

One of the most famous party games played with a deck of cards is “Daifugō” (also known as “Rich Man, Poor Man”).

Choose four players, deal the cards evenly, and decide the order of play.

Each card has a strength, and you can only play a card that is stronger than the previous one.

For example, if the weakest card, a 3, is played, the next player must play a 4 or higher.

If you don’t have a stronger card in hand, you can pass.

When everyone passes, play restarts with the person who played the last card, and the first player to run out of cards wins.

Daifugō has many local rules, so mixing in different variations can make it even more fun!

If you have a moderate budget, a “voice-guessing game” using helium gas is recommended.

Since women and men have different pitch ranges, if it feels too easy, you could split roles by gender.

The price of helium has been rising year by year, so if many people are playing, you’ll need a corresponding budget.

If you don’t have the budget, simply pinching your nose or speaking in falsetto should be more than enough! When inhaling helium, keep social distancing in mind and, if possible, give each person their own canister.
