Many people pay close attention to the melody, the lyrics, or the vocalist’s delivery, but if you’ve played drums before, don’t you naturally find your ears drawn to the drum sounds?

So in this article, for those of you who can’t help but follow the drums, we’ll spotlight tracks from the latest Japanese music where the drumming really stands out.

Of course, “cool drumming” can mean many things: songs with great groove, tracks featuring flashy fills and phrases, or pieces that seem understated but showcase subtle, refined technique.

We’ve picked out cool songs from a variety of angles, so be sure to listen with a special focus on the drum performance.

A track overflowing with tight, precise drumming that you can’t help but prick up your ears to.

Released in October 1998, this song was the first single after yukihiro officially joined as a member.

It’s marked by a clear tone that evokes the end of winter and the arrival of spring, with intricately crafted drum work adding color across the entire piece.

Beginning with rhythms that pierce the cold air, the contrast between stillness and motion creates a pleasantly taut tension.

The lyrics, which depict transparent, pure emotions, convey the strength and hope to move forward while reflecting on the past.

Like a flower that blooms after enduring the winter chill, this is a song that signals the start of a new season.

Mysterious Hero Silver ChildSadisutikku Mika Bando

Sadistic Mika Band’s “Kaiketsu Silver Child” features an eye-catching intro with prominent toms.

The drummer is Yukihiro Takahashi, who also performed as a member of Yellow Magic Orchestra, and his groove-laden playing—rich with effective ghost notes—is a major draw.

This particular track leans into a psychedelic rock vibe, and by applying deep reverb to the drums to match the atmosphere, his bold phrases are brought even more vividly to the fore!

Get Up, LucyTHEE MICHELLE GUN ELEPHANT

You can recognize the song just from the drum fill that leads into the intro—that’s Thee Michelle Gun Elephant’s “Get Up Lucy.” The tight, high-pitched snare sound played by drummer Kazuyuki Kuhara is really striking.

Kuhara is a CANOPUS user, and that quick attack and crisp tone are a defining element of the track.

He also lays down a tight beat on “LOVE ROCKETS” by Birthday, the theme song for the 2022 hit film THE FIRST SLAM DUNK, so be sure to give it a listen!

END OF SORROWLUNA SEA

Shinya is a popular drummer known for his overwhelming drumming and bright, talkative personality.

He is the drummer for the rock band LUNA SEA and has also performed as a support drummer for Kyosuke Himuro and Koji Kikkawa.

At LUNA SEA concerts, he has even carried out large-scale performances where the drum kit is fixed to a base and rotates in midair.

On LUNA SEA’s seventh single, “END OF SORROW,” released in 1996, his drumming—with its wide dynamic range from very soft to very loud—underpins the song’s sound.

Sadistic DesireX JAPAN

YOSHIKI of X JAPAN is known for his trademark intense drumming—so intense it has even caused neck injuries.

The track “SADISTIC DESIRE,” from their debut album Vanishing Vision, kicks off with one of his ferocious fills.

The fill, which alternates rapidly between toms and bass drum before moving to the snare, makes a powerful impact.

The frequent double strokes on the bass drum throughout the song also give the sound a tight, punchy feel.

D.I.J’s PistolBLANKEY JET CITY

BLANKEY JET CITY’s “D.I.J no Pistol” features an impressive intro that uses hi-hat and snare effectively, reminiscent of Led Zeppelin’s classic “Rock and Roll.” The straight-ahead beat crafted by drummer Tatsuya Nakamura is irresistible in this song! Though it has a punk rock feel, his drumming weaves in ride cymbal at key moments, keeping the phrases from becoming monotonous.

The snare cuts through beautifully as well, making it an incredibly pleasant listen.

Haikara Hakuchihappiiendo

When it comes to the drummer of Happy End, pioneers of Japanese rock, it’s Takashi Matsumoto—who also sent countless classic songs into the world as a lyricist.

One track where Matsumoto’s drumming truly shines is their first single, Haikara Hakuchi, released in 1971.

The driving, high-velocity beat interlocks with Haruomi Hosono’s soulful bassline to create a groovy feel.

It’s also rare for a Japanese song in that era to feature a drum solo, and the intense playing on snare and floor tom makes it a must-hear for any drummer!
