When you listen to music, what do you focus on?

Many people pay close attention to the melody, the lyrics, or the vocalist’s delivery, but if you’ve played drums before, don’t you naturally find your ears drawn to the drum sounds?

So in this article, for those of you who can’t help but follow the drums, we’ll spotlight tracks from the latest Japanese music where the drumming really stands out.

Of course, “cool drumming” can mean many things: songs with great groove, tracks featuring flashy fills and phrases, or pieces that seem understated but showcase subtle, refined technique.

We’ve picked out cool songs from a variety of angles, so be sure to listen with a special focus on the drum performance.

Ready to RockBAND-MAID

BAND-MAID is a five-piece, all-female group in maid outfits that commands immense popularity not only in Japan but overseas as well, dominating the metal scene with songs and live performances backed by overwhelming vocal and instrumental prowess.

Their track “Ready to Rock,” released in April 2025, also serves as the opening theme for the TV anime “Rock Is a Lady’s Refinement.” Blending advanced technique with catchy melodies, it’s a superb song that could become their next killer tune.

The ensemble lets you fully savor drummer AKANE’s exceptional playing, delivering a barrage of high-level performance from the intro as her relentless twin-pedal work goes head-to-head with KANAMI’s aggressive guitar—an exchange so intense it will overwhelm even non-drummers.

AKANE herself has said it’s the most technically difficult piece she’s ever played, so be sure to experience her gripping performance!

coldrain, the “melodious loud rock” band that Nagoya proudly presents to the world.

Since forming in 2007, they’ve been active not only in Japan but overseas as well, consistently leading the scene for years with a truly world-class sound—no introduction needed.

Their track INCOMPLETE, released in March 2025, is a quintessentially aggressive yet melodic number in their signature style.

Drummer Katsuma’s performance—sometimes supporting, sometimes driving the ensemble as it fluidly shifts between breakneck passages and melodic sections—is nothing short of superb.

The tight playing in the intro crafts a unique tension and stokes the listener’s anticipation, and it’s seriously cool.

There’s also a Drum Cam video of this track on his official YouTube channel, so be sure to check that out too!

KICKBACKYonezu Kenshi

Yonezu Kenshi’s massive hit “KICK BACK,” the opening theme for the TV anime Chainsaw Man, fuses an energetic rock sound with drum and bass, and is characterized by a structure that makes extensive use of key changes.

Its rollercoaster-like, bold musical shifts are sure to astonish listeners.

While the aggressive beat grabs your attention, the drummer is actually Shun Ishiwaka, a rising young jazz drummer.

He was also a classmate of Daiki Tsuneta—who played guitar and bass on the track—at Tokyo University of the Arts, and there’s no doubt his playing further accentuates the song’s coolness.

This is a masterpiece where you can revel in incredibly cool drum work that expresses a danceable groove based on a 16-beat feel—coexisting aggression and chic—sometimes supple, sometimes dynamic.

The four-piece band Aooo, currently drawing intense attention among music fans, is made up of members with diverse backgrounds.

Their drummer, Tsumiki, is a multi-talented artist who is also active as a Vocaloid producer and singer-songwriter.

Rather than relying on a simple four-on-the-floor, the rhythm patterns constantly play with the off-beats, maximizing the ensemble with the other instruments, and the arranger’s eye for the piece as a whole—befitting a composer—is superb.

It’s sure to be instructive even for intermediate drummers who struggle with arrangements ending up sounding similar.

BILLY BOO has been earning praise for their ability to distill so-called “Black music” like soul, R&B, and hip-hop into a unique sound and present it as their own brand of J-POP.

Formed around popular singer-songwriter KAZUKI UJIIE, the group has been drawing fervent attention from early-adopter music fans.

Their track Backlight, released in January 2025, is quintessentially theirs: stylish yet fully danceable, with an irresistible catchiness.

RIKIYA, who provides the backbone of the band, lays down grooves that reflect the influence of classic hip-hop, and the interplay with the earworm guitar riffs and sinuous bass lines is seriously cool.

Even if you usually listen mainly to rock or pop, be sure to tune in to how great the drumming is on a track like this.

If you want to hear drums that are different from the straight 8-beat typical of so-called rock and punk, we recommend “Work Hard Play Hard” by YONA YONA WEEKENDERS.

Though the members originally come from a melodic hardcore background, their music carries the scent of city pop and soul, and the stylish ensemble truly embodies what they call “good music that pairs well with drinks.” “Work Hard Play Hard” is included on the album “LIVE,” and it’s a track with a comfortably chill mood.

Sohshi Kohara, a.k.a.

“beatsoldier,” delivers drums that balance tightness and suppleness, creating the groove at the core of the song; if you’re a drummer who struggles with swung rhythms, every element of his playing is a lesson.

By the way, the music video for this track features Kohara front and center, so be sure to check it out as well.

It’s a masterpiece of a pop song with a refined ensemble that feels so good—your heart is captured from the very first drum roll of the intro! The intriguingly named four-piece Retororiron was formed in 2020 by classmates at Senzoku Gakuen College of Music, and although they’re a young band who have only just secured their major debut for April 2025, they’ve already drawn attention at home and abroad, even selling out a show at Roppongi EX THEATER while still independent.

They’re not the type of band that flaunts their chops, but their performance ability is unquestionable.

In their October 2024 release Unbalanced Blend, as mentioned at the start, the playful yet comfortable pop ensemble is truly superb, and Taiki Nagayama’s drum work defines a groove that’s both poppy and mellow.
