When you listen to music, what do you focus on?

Many people pay close attention to the melody, the lyrics, or the vocalist’s delivery, but if you’ve played drums before, don’t you naturally find your ears drawn to the drum sounds?

So in this article, for those of you who can’t help but follow the drums, we’ll spotlight tracks from the latest Japanese music where the drumming really stands out.

Of course, “cool drumming” can mean many things: songs with great groove, tracks featuring flashy fills and phrases, or pieces that seem understated but showcase subtle, refined technique.

We’ve picked out cool songs from a variety of angles, so be sure to listen with a special focus on the drum performance.

Get Up, LucyTHEE MICHELLE GUN ELEPHANT

You can recognize the song just from the drum fill that leads into the intro—that’s Thee Michelle Gun Elephant’s “Get Up Lucy.” The tight, high-pitched snare sound played by drummer Kazuyuki Kuhara is really striking.

Kuhara is a CANOPUS user, and that quick attack and crisp tone are a defining element of the track.

He also lays down a tight beat on “LOVE ROCKETS” by Birthday, the theme song for the 2022 hit film THE FIRST SLAM DUNK, so be sure to give it a listen!

Sadistic DesireX JAPAN

YOSHIKI of X JAPAN is known for his trademark intense drumming—so intense it has even caused neck injuries.

The track “SADISTIC DESIRE,” from their debut album Vanishing Vision, kicks off with one of his ferocious fills.

The fill, which alternates rapidly between toms and bass drum before moving to the snare, makes a powerful impact.

The frequent double strokes on the bass drum throughout the song also give the sound a tight, punchy feel.

is a three-piece rock band performing under a name abbreviated from “webbing off duckling,” meaning “a duckling that can’t swim.” Their track “Baka to Toraba,” included on their fourth album, Emotion, ramps up the energy with a catchy guitar riff and a driving ensemble.

The bouncy shuffle-beat rhythm and tight sound showcase drummer Motoyoshi Nakajima’s solid technique and groove.

It’s a sharp-edged rock tune with excellent arrangements that make extensive use of syncopation.

This work is defined by its tremendous sonic pressure and overwhelming sense of groove.

The collaboration between Knosis and Hanabie creates a sound world that is both fierce and delicate, captivating listeners.

Released in September 2024, the track brought a fresh breeze to Japan’s metalcore scene.

As the support drummer, Kazuma Moroishi anchors the rhythm with advanced technique, and his intricate rhythm patterns and precise footwork powerfully underpin the entire song.

The lyrics, sharply portraying themes of trust and betrayal and the exploitation of the self, also leave a strong impression.

It’s a must-listen not only for metalcore fans but for anyone seeking a new musical experience.

Task-n from HEY-SMITH is also one of those technically skilled drummers who can precisely deliver the kind of intense, speedy phrases characteristic of melodic hardcore.

This song stands out for the variety of its drum phrases, with the drums playing a major role in drawing listeners into the song’s world.

There’s plenty to listen for: the beat in the intro, the fills that pop up in between sections, and the tight sixteenth-note phrases with shifting accents that appear in the exciting latter half of the track.

It’s no exaggeration to say that the butterflies you feel while listening to “I’M IN DREAM” are thanks to these drums.

SLAUGHTER HOUSELOUDNESS

LOUDNESS is a metal band formed mainly by guitarist Akira Takasaki and drummer Munetaka Higuchi, both former members of Lazy.

Their 15th single, “SLAUGHTER HOUSE,” delivers a powerful impact with a metal sound that features aggressive guitar work.

From the opening drum solo to the solid, back-to-basics 8-beat, you can really feel Munetaka Higuchi’s skill and appeal.

It’s a powerful track that lets you revel in the sheer sound pressure unique to metal tunes.

Tokyokinoko teikoku

Kinoko Teikoku – Tokyo (MV)

While this track has the vibe of a ballad, its passionately driving beat—like an outpouring of pent-up emotion—is irresistible.

Many of Kinoko Teikoku’s songs show a shoegaze influence, and here too, the opening interlude features an aggressive pattern of relentless cymbal strikes paired with a heavily compressed, crushingly distorted guitar sound.

Then, when the vocals come in, it flips to a tight, restrained groove using just kick, hi-hat, and snare.

Pay attention to the drumming, which skillfully controls the balance between stillness and movement to match the song’s development.
