Speech Song
Enka is an abbreviation of “enzetsuka,” meaning “speech songs.” These “speech songs” were created during the Freedom and People’s Rights Movement of the 1870s, turning anxieties and criticisms about politics and society into song. At first, they were mainly sung by people equivalent to today’s university students, but gradually political activists began performing them. Songs like “Dynamite Bushi” and “Oppekepe Bushi” are said to have been popular.
