May is a month full of seasonal events, such as Children’s Day and Mother’s Day.

The weather becomes milder and more comfortable, making it easier for older adults to stay active.

With that in mind, this time we’re introducing easy, enjoyable recreational activities for seniors.

By incorporating crafts and songs unique to May, you can create an atmosphere where participants feel the season while having fun.

Everything is simple to try, so please enjoy participating together with the older adults around you.

The balmy month of May is a time when it’s easier for older adults to get moving.

This time, we’re introducing a brain-training exercise with singing that’s perfect for the season.

May is also the season of fresh green tea.

“Chatsumi” (Tea Picking) is a children’s song that symbolizes early summer in Japan, known for its bright, rhythmic melody.

It’s easy to learn, making it suitable for older adults to exercise to.

We’ve incorporated traditional Japanese tea-picking movements into the routine, so it’s easy to enjoy casually.

Singing together as a group also creates a sense of unity and makes for a delightful time.

Let’s have fun with a game where you compete for points using balloons.

Inflate a balloon and tie a string to it with a weight attached to the end.

Before you start, write point values on the floor.

Aim for the spaces with the written points and throw the balloon.

The person who scores the most points wins.

The trick seems to be to swing the weight firmly as you throw the balloon.

Throwing the balloon can also be an effective workout for the upper body and arms.

Since balloons aren’t very heavy, there’s little risk of injury if they’re dropped, which is nice.

Here’s a tabletop game that uses balls.

Prepare balls of different sizes, such as ping-pong balls or rubber balls about the size of a fist.

An older adult rolls a ball from one end of the table.

On the opposite side of the table from where the older adult is rolling, hang a basket.

The game is to roll the ball and get it into this basket.

It can be played while seated, so it seems suitable for older adults who use wheelchairs as well.

Moments like “It almost went in but didn’t!” are likely to make it exciting for the participants.

This time, I’ll introduce the Pika-Goro game.

Have the older adults sit facing each other, each holding two sticks.

The caller says “pika-pika” or “goro-goro.” On the cue “dokan,” the older adults should both grip the sticks and raise them.

Once everyone gets used to it, calling out “pika-pika” or “goro-goro” several times and then feinting can make it even more exciting.

The second is the Towel Catch Game.

The person holding the towel throws it toward a teammate, and the teammate catches it with a newspaper stick.

The thrower needs to control the strength of their throw, and the receiver needs to imagine where it will fly in order to catch it well.

Recreational activities that get lots of people involved can spark conversations between those who don’t usually interact.

While Tango no Sekku is known as Children’s Day, its original meaning—warding off evil and praying for good health—brings blessings to everyone.

So today, we’d like to introduce a foot bath using sweet flag (shobu).

All you need is a large container, hot water, and shobu.

That’s it.

Fill the container with hot water and float the shobu on top.

Since the leaves could potentially irritate the skin, chopping them into small pieces and placing them in a mesh bag allows you to enjoy it safely.

The expected benefits include promoting circulation, relieving fatigue, strengthening the internal organs, easing sensitivity to cold, and alleviating stiff shoulders, making it especially pleasing for older adults.

You can find shobu at supermarkets or florists, so please give it a try.
