Here, we’ve gathered craft ideas perfect for 4-year-olds in February.

Kids can also experience the joy of displaying their finished pieces or giving them as gifts.

Colorful Oni Made with Balloons

Since Setsubun is coming up, I made an oni (demon) out of balloons.
Colorful Oni Made with Balloons

Here’s an ogre craft idea made by sticking face and horn parts cut from construction paper, plus yarn hair, onto inflated balloons.

Prepare colorful balloons, have an adult inflate them and tie the necks.

After your ogres are finished, you can tie string to the balloon necks and hang them from the ceiling as decorations.

If you treat the hanging ogres like targets, you can enjoy bean-throwing; try making “beans” out of newspaper and have fun.

Use balloons in a variety of colors to express your own unique ogres.

Stencil

Stencil

February is full of winter fun, with events like Setsubun and Valentine’s Day.

While enjoying the seasonal atmosphere, why not try stencil art with a 4-year-old? First, prepare a stencil sheet in a shape the child chooses.

Tape around the sheet with masking tape, then add color using watercolors or crayons to create an original artwork.

By reusing the sheet, you can enjoy the same shapes with different colors and patterns, which helps nurture a child’s creativity.

It’s also lovely to create winter-themed pieces to display at the nursery school.

Oni’s Den-den Daiko (Demon’s Pellet Drum)

Oni's Den-den Daiko (Demon's Pellet Drum)

How about trying a den-den daiko (hand drum) with an oni (demon) face motif? Use colorful construction paper to make parts like the oni’s face and horns.

Let your creativity shine—each child’s uniquely drawn expression will reflect their sensibility.

Punch holes on both sides of the finished oni face, then attach foil balls with string, and you’ll have an original den-den daiko.

By shaking and playing with it, children can feel Setsubun up close.

It helps them understand Japanese tradition while creating fun memories.

Heart sun catcher

Heart sun catcher

How about we all try making handmade sun catchers that sparkle in the sunlight? Randomly stick masking tape of various colors, patterns, and widths onto a backing sheet, then layer another sheet with a heart-shaped cutout on top.

You can also swap the masking tape for colorful round stickers and the like.

Trim the excess around the heart to neaten the shape, and your sun catcher is complete.

The degree of transparency and how the light reflects will change depending on the backing material, so try making different versions with copy paper, construction paper, laminating film, and more.

Snowman made with tissue paper

Let’s make a cute snowman using tissue paper and a plastic bag.

Tear the tissue paper into thin strips, pack them into the plastic bag, and tie the opening.

Use a chenille stem (pipe cleaner) to cinch the middle and create the snowman’s waist.

Tape down any excess plastic to round out the shape, and the snowman base is done.

Finally, attach parts like eyes, a nose, and a hat made from origami or construction paper, and your snowman is complete! If you prepare the small parts in advance, kids can make it using just fine-motor actions like tearing and tying, so even children who aren’t comfortable using scissors can work on it safely.

Oni bean holder

Oni bean holder

Why not make a palm-sized ogre-themed bean holder you can enjoy with your child? The key is to let them choose origami paper in their favorite color and draw the facial features together.

Seeing the finished ogre face and hearing them proudly say, “So cute!” is a lovely moment.

Plus, the ogre bean holder, with its horn as a charming highlight, sparks kids’ creativity.

It’s perfect for Setsubun events and can also serve as a stylish room accessory.

Let’s liven up Setsubun with a handmade bean holder that makes bean throwing even more fun!

Spending time making snowflakes with children is a part of creative winter play.

Folding and cutting paper over and over, and then seeing completely new shapes appear, is sure to bring delightful surprises to caregivers and teachers as well.

When you line up the cut-out snowflakes, you’ll create a wall display that feels as if you’re in a snowy landscape.

The process by which the paper handed out by teachers is transformed into art by the children also becomes a valuable opportunity to cultivate precision and creativity.

Let’s fill the winter season with the joy of creation together with children!
