A Cruel Angel’s ThesisTakahashi Yoko

Released in 1995, the song “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis.” It’s widely known for becoming a hit as the theme song of the anime Evangelion, and it’s also a karaoke staple.
Not just as an anime song, it holds the top spot in the ranking of the most-sung karaoke songs of the Heisei era.
Beloved across genders and generations, it’s a track that gets everyone hyped in any setting.
Precisely because it’s such a classic, being able to sing it well makes it a really cool number.
moonlightOnitsuka Chihiro

It was chosen as the theme song for the drama Trick, starring Yukie Nakama and Hiroshi Abe.
I think you’ll find Chihiro Onitsuka’s songs extremely difficult.
Her vocals, which seem to use the whole mouth and body, are hard to imitate.
However, if you sing as though you’re projecting your voice from deep within your body, it will sound cool.
That way, you can truly express the liberation from oppression that this song depicts!

riveriri

iri is a female R&B singer-songwriter known for her stylish musicality.
Among Japanese female singers, she has a notably low vocal timbre.
When people think of songs with a wide vocal range, they might picture singers with high voices, but artists with lower voices often have significant dips as well, which naturally leads to a broader range.
This track is one such example: in addition to high phrases, it also features distinctly low phrases, making it a song with a quite wide range.
With strong Western pop influences, it’s also a piece that’s difficult to deliver in a straightforward, simple manner.
Saviortsukuyomi

This is the 13th digital single from Tsukuyomi, the music project by Vocaloid producer YurryCanon, released in July 2023.
Amid a fiercely intricate, up-and-down vocal melody, vocalist Yue delivers a wonderfully dramatic performance, expertly switching among a wide array of high tones.
If you can nail this song coolly at karaoke, you’ll definitely draw everyone’s attention! That said, it’s a pretty difficult piece to sing, so please be careful not to strain your voice.
whereabouts unknownAdo

This is Ado’s 18th single in total, written and composed by Ringo Sheena, released in October 2022.
It was written as the theme song for the horror film “Karada Sagashi.” The song is infused with a unique, high-strung energy that feels like a true “clash of personalities” between Sheena, who penned it, and Ado, who performs it.
You can probably tell at first listen that this track is quite a formidable challenge to sing at karaoke.
It showcases truly protean vocals—from gentle falsetto to fierce, almost screaming delivery—and I imagine many listeners were shocked the first time they heard it.
But this is only possible because Ado has mastered solid vocal technique, so please don’t overexert yourselves when you try to sing it.
In the sections that call for a screaming style, do your best to avoid putting strain on your throat.
MEOWSTAYC

STAYC is a K-pop idol group with an adorable style and performances that leave a strong impression.
They’re a classic idol group known for their catchy musicality, and lately they’ve been rapidly gaining popularity in Japan as well.
Among their songs, the one I especially recommend is MEOW.
It may seem catchy and easy to sing, but it surprisingly has many high-pitched parts, and they come one after another.
On top of that, the mood changes drastically in the rap section, so a wide expressive range and solid fundamental vocal skills are required.
Once moreTani Yuuki

This is Tani Yuuki’s 11th digital single, released in September 2022.
As you may know, Tani Yuuki is a male singer, but his slightly androgynous voice is something I’d love for women to try and recreate by singing it at karaoke, which is why I’m introducing it here.
When you listen through the song, your attention naturally goes to the chorus, where falsetto is used.
However, I think the most important point when singing this song is how convincingly you can deliver the relatively low range outside of the chorus.
Try practicing so that you can produce a voice that resonates firmly in the chest cavity, as if you’re directing the sound toward your lower jaw inside your mouth.
