Cool Japanese female vocalists (91–100)
Friday’s Free FairAkao Kazushige

She may be something of a well-kept secret in general, but she’s the lead singer of the Japanese stylistic hard rock band TERRA ROSA.
For those unfamiliar with the band, quite a few listeners might think, “Wait, isn’t this a male vocalist?” Her voice holds its own against the intensely distorted guitars and the heavily overdriven organ—one of TERRA ROSA’s trademarks—without ever being overpowered.
I’ve chatted with Ms.
Akao several times and even done some casual recording with her, and she’s told me she actually wants to sing in a more feminine style (laughs).
She’s a truly outstanding singer whom anyone aiming to be an HM/HR vocalist should listen to at least once!
PLAYER 1Nagay Haruko

Haruko Nagaya, the vocalist of Ryokuoushoku Shakai, commands a strong presence with her crystal-clear singing voice.
Formed during her time at Chukyo University, the band has gained popularity for songs that skillfully fuse pop and rock, paired with her distinctive vocals that blend poignancy and power.
Since their major debut in 2018, they have provided theme songs for numerous TV dramas and anime, and have produced smash hits with over 300 million streams.
In 2020, they won Best Rock Video at the MTV VMAJ, and in 2023 they received an Excellent Work Award at the Japan Record Awards.
As a music creator who also writes and composes, Nagaya has a gift for vividly expressing the emotions of teens and people in their twenties, resonating with many listeners.
She’s a highly recommended artist for music fans seeking a pure, translucent voice and lyrics that truly move the heart.
Junkie Boyaohirame

A singer active mainly on Niconico, Rame Aoki.
While her vocal timbre is different, her style as a singer is close to Ado’s, and she excels at powerful vocals that mix in shouts.
To put it simply, if Ado is a power type, then Rame Aoki is more of a speed type—she’s great at sharp, snappy delivery.
Both her covers and originals show off that appeal to the fullest, so be sure to check out a variety of her songs.
ECHOLittle Glee Monster

Little Glee Monster, Japan’s one-and-only female vocal group that continues to soar.
From powerful, overwhelming vocals to moving a cappella that captures delicate nuances, their signature harmonies resonate beautifully.
Listening to them fills you with a stirring sense of strength.
Each of the five members sings with distinct characteristics, which is another highlight, making them highly recommended for anyone who wants to enjoy a wide variety of songs!
iolitePORIN

With a refined musicality rooted in city pop and indie pop, PORIN continues to captivate the music scene.
She began her career in 2013 as the vocalist and keyboardist of Awesome City Club, making her major-label debut in 2015.
In 2021, the band won the Excellence Award at the Japan Record Awards, propelling their recognition to new heights.
Her unique world, woven from delicate lyrics and beautiful melodies, also shines through in her solo work.
Beyond music, she demonstrates her talent across diverse fields such as fashion and art, and her expressive power consistently resonates with music fans who have a creative sensibility.
Something like “happy”nachi

Centered around Nachi—who grew up in rural Niigata and picked up the guitar in middle school after becoming captivated by Hi-STANDARD—Sabishisuta was formed in March 2022 and has been making headlines with their rapid rise.
In just five short months after forming, they landed a slot at SUMMER SONIC and were also selected to join 04 Limited Sazabys on tour, solidifying their momentum as a girls’ rock band.
In January 2024, they signed with PIZZA OF DEATH, headed by their idol Ken Yokoyama of Hi-STANDARD, and made their major-label debut with the album “Kakugo o Kimero!” Their music—singing of inner thrills and frustrations, as well as gratitude toward loved ones, set to melodies that evoke a sense of nostalgia—captures the hearts of many with its pure emotion and powerful performance.
snow camelliaKobayashi Sachiko
Sachiko Kobayashi, known as a grand dame of the enka world, debuted in 1964 at the young age of 10 and skyrocketed to stardom with “Omoide-zake” in 1979.
She won the Japan Record Award for Best Vocal Performance, and the song became a massive hit, surpassing two million copies sold.
With her overwhelming vocal prowess and distinctive artistic worldview, she continues to captivate countless fans.
At the 2015 NHK Kouhaku Uta Gassen, she drew attention with a special-guest appearance and internet-driven collaborative staging.
In recent years, she’s affectionately known as the “Last Boss” and is active on her YouTube channel.
