Cool Japanese female vocals (1–10)
Cactus GirlAina ji Endo

A singer known as a member of BiSH, the six-piece girl group that has taken the idol scene by storm as a “punk band without instruments.” Her distinctive husky voice shakes listeners to the core, and many might feel it has a kind of magic that can move them to tears even with intense songs.
In 2021, her vocals also drew attention as part of A_o, a unit with the indie folk band ROTH BART BARON.
Although BiSH announced its disbandment in 2023, she remains a promising young artist highly anticipated both as a solo act and in unit projects.
Soul RevolutionOchi Shiho

The vocalist we’re introducing this time, Shiho Ochi of Superfly—her greatest appeal, above all, lies in that powerful voice that could be called anything but typically Japanese.
Even in the high parts of a song, her delivery never turns into that strained, constricted sound—truly impressive.
Many of my vocal training students admire her and aim for a voice like hers.
What’s also remarkable is that, despite the power, her singing never becomes rough in a bad way.
The song featured in the video this time, “Tamashii Revolution,” is a powerful rock track, but if you’re interested, try searching for Superfly’s ballads as well.
You’ll gain an even deeper appreciation of the charm of her voice!
an open secretShiina Ringo

Ringo Sheena, with her cool image and charisma, is a vocalist known for her wide vocal range and distinctive singing style.
She masterfully performs across a broad spectrum of genres, from rock ’n’ roll to jazz and hip-hop.
She also plays instruments such as guitar and keyboards, and handles lyric writing, composition, and arrangement—truly a multi-talented artist.
She is one of Japan’s top female singers.
FoolsMatsuo Remi

If you like husky, cool vocals, I recommend Remi Matsuo, the vocalist of the rock band GLIM SPANKY.
GLIM SPANKY made their major debut in 2014, and their song “Orokamonotachi,” which served as the theme for the film “Impossibility Defense,” is known as one of their signature tracks.
Matsuo’s biggest attraction as a vocalist is, of course, her husky voice, but she’s also captivating for her passionate, soulful performances that draw on a vast musical background she’s immersed herself in since childhood.
crippleSato Chiaki

Chiaki Sato, who served as the vocalist for the rock band Kinoko Teikoku, formed in 2007 and active until 2019, is also a very popular singer.
Her appeal is often attributed to her superb lyrics, rich with skillful turns of phrase that convey ineffable emotions and resonate deeply with listeners.
At the same time, her expressive ability to make any song her own—whether a dark, moody track, an emotionally stirring ballad, or a bright, pop-tinged tune—is another major draw.
