Born in 1978, Ringo Sheena is one of Japan’s most prominent singer-songwriters.

She’s known for a musical style that spans a wide range of genres, including J-pop, jazz, and rock.

Since her debut in 1998, she has produced numerous hit songs.

Starting in 2004, she also gained prominence as the vocalist of the rock band Tokyo Incidents.

Her songs, with their distinctive worldview and literary sensibility, have been highly acclaimed.

Sheena has said she hopes her music will blend naturally into people’s lives “like background music in a supermarket,” and she values intuitive composition.

Her music aims to accompany women’s everyday lives and inner emotions, becoming the soundtrack to listeners’ lives.

She’s an artist highly recommended for those drawn to inventive sounds and a powerful singing voice!

PRINCESS PRINCESS

MKishitani Kaori

A track from PRINCESS PRINCESS’s fourth album, “Let’s Get Crazy,” released in November 1988.

It was also released as the B-side to the single “Diamonds” in April 1989.

Despite having no tie-in and not being a lead track at the time of release, it later gained numerous tie-ins—such as being used as an insert song for the “Broken-Hearted Message Board” segment on Yomiuri TV’s “Zamaa KANKAN!”—and became popular, now counted among PRINCESS PRINCESS’s signature songs.

It’s a ballad with a deeply affecting melody and lyrics, so its acclaim is well deserved.

And what most strongly imprints the song’s “bittersweetness” on listeners is, above all, vocalist Kaori Kishitani’s slightly husky voice.

Why not give it a listen once in a while and indulge in a little nostalgia for past romances?

She has an R&B background, and as a result, she frequently incorporates techniques like ad-libs and falls—applied R&B vocal skills—into her songs.

Although her live performance experience is still limited and there are some rough edges in projection and vocal production, she has already mastered these advanced techniques, so we can look forward to her future growth and success.

The song we’re introducing here, “A Flower Blooming in the Rubble,” was produced as the ending theme for the PC game Grisaia: Chronos Rebellion, and as expected from a professional who works with “the voice,” she delivers an irresistibly appealing and consistently steady vocal performance throughout the entire track.

This is Lila Ikuta’s eighth digital-only single, released in January 2023; she is also active as ikura, the vocalist of YOASOBI.

By the way, the title “蒲公英” is read as “Tanpopo,” meaning dandelion.

Lila Ikuta has long been praised for her captivating high-tone voice, and that charm is in full effect in this track as well! By skillfully switching between a chest voice that resonates with rich upper overtones and a soft falsetto (head voice), she delivers a brilliant performance.

If you can reproduce this at karaoke, you’re sure to earn admiration from those around you.

But please, don’t strain your throat trying to force the high notes.

Goodbye DaysYUI

YUI – Goodbye Days (Official MV)
Goodbye DaysYUI

Before her debut, YUI used to sit cross-legged and do acoustic street performances, singing while playing the guitar, and at the time she was even called the female Ozaki Yutaka.

She wrote both the lyrics and music herself, and you can feel her signature purity and simplicity as a kind of coolness.

Watching YUI play the guitar is cool, too.
