Cool Japanese female vocalists (11–20)
I long to see you now.MISIA

A singer from Kagoshima, Japan—renowned not only domestically but across Asia—who is known as a catalyst for the women’s R&B boom in the J-POP scene.
With a five-octave vocal range and a richly expressive voice, her singing is truly overwhelming to hear.
Thanks to her exceptional vocal ability, she performed on major stages such as the centennial opening ceremony of the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C., in 2012, and the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, earning worldwide acclaim.
Beyond her musical career, she is also actively involved in social and charitable initiatives, making her a widely noted artist for the breadth of her contributions.
The FLAMEKeiko Rī

Keiko Lee is one of Japan’s leading jazz singers.
A Korean-Japanese artist, she has a rich, husky voice with a depth you wouldn’t expect from an Asian singer.
Her taste in songs is exceptional, and her musical style feels practically like Western pop.
The FLAME is one of her signature works, offering deep, sophisticated melodies that blend adult contemporary with jazz.
If you’re looking for a low, husky voice, be sure to check out her music.
Limit LoversTerada Keiko

SHOW-YA, known as a pioneering all-female rock band active in the 1980s, has captivated many fans with their overwhelming vocal power and electrifying performances.
Since their major debut in 1985, they have stood out in the hard rock scene, producing hits such as “Genkai LOVERS.” The vocalist, Keiko Terada, commands a presence truly worthy of being called a “powerhouse voice.” In 1987, they organized the outdoor event “NAON no YAON,” featuring only female musicians, thereby helping to expand opportunities for women artists.
They’re a band highly recommended for anyone drawn to powerful vocals and a fiery rock spirit.
Howl at the Moonsuis

Yorushika is a Japanese rock duo consisting of a man and a woman.
Today, I’d like to introduce suis, the singer of Yorushika.
What stands out immediately about suis is her deep, soft yet powerful voice.
Without resorting to any overbearing display of “heat” or intensity, she consistently delivers a gentle vocal performance that still conveys the essence of each song with precision—something truly worthy of high praise.
I’m only gazing at you.Daikoku Maki

As an artist born in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Maki Ohguro has captivated many fans with her powerful vocals and compelling performances.
She began performing in bands in high school and made her debut in 1992.
Since then, she has colored the music scene with songs rooted in pop while embracing a wide range of genres, including rock and R&B.
Known for her strong vocals and catchy melodies, she won the Excellence Award at the Japan Record Awards and the Best 5 Artists at the Japan Gold Disc Awards in 1995.
After overcoming a period of hiatus, she continues to be energetically active today.
Her world, conveyed through powerful singing and lyrics that resonate deeply, is a perfect match for listeners seeking both the strength and warmth that music can offer.
The decisive battle is on Friday.Yoshida Miwa

In recent years, there have been many Japanese singers whose performances can hold their own against top Black vocalists from the home of the genre, but I think one reason Miwa Yoshida’s vocals are so widely loved is that, while she has that kind of power, she never loses the uniquely Japanese delicacy and the pop sensibility that resonates with Japanese listeners.
While preserving that “Japaneseness,” this song takes on some pretty challenging rhythms—especially the 16-beat feel typical of R&B—and she delivers the difficult-to-fit Japanese lyrics flawlessly, creating a real groove.
Please listen with a focus on that sense of rhythm and groove.

I can’t stay a daydreaming girlAikawa Nanase

A representative female rocker from Osaka.
Even now, “Yume Miru Shoujo ja Irarenai” still feels striking and fresh, doesn’t it? Her glossy, beautiful vocals are incredibly cool! The punch she packs really feels like a true rock singer.
I hope she’ll always stay that badass big sister figure.
