Making squishies

Making squishies

This is a science project where you can make your own squishy that’s so soft and satisfying you’ll want to keep touching it forever! The materials are a sponge, acrylic paint, water, decoupage glue, and lightweight clay.

Cut the sponge into the shape of a slice of bread, then mix the clay with water and coat the surface.

Dry it with a hair dryer.

Once dry, paint it with acrylics, let the paint dry, then apply decoupage glue to finish.

It takes a bit of time to dry, but aside from that, it doesn’t take long to make.

You can also make it in the shape of your favorite sweets.

Reborn Vegetable

Summer Independent Study: Grow and Eat Cut Vegetables [Regrowth Cultivation] [Research]
Reborn Vegetable

Do you know the term “reborn vegetables”? It refers to regrowing vegetables from scraps that would normally be thrown away, and lately it’s become popular enough to be shortened to “rebo-veggies.” The kinds of vegetables you can regrow are limited, but some will make you think, “You can regrow that too?” Since it’s basically hydroponic, you can grow them in empty tofu containers or plastic bottles.

For something easy, pea shoots are very simple to grow.

It’s perfect as an independent research project for lower elementary school kids—don’t forget to observe and take photos every day.

It’s also great that you can harvest them and eat them again.

Handmade picture book

If she likes sewing, how about a summer project like this? Try making a handmade picture book using fabric, felt, buttons, and more.

For the base—the part that would normally be paper in a picture book—use your favorite fabric or felt, then decorate it with ribbons, buttons, appliqué, and embroidery to complete the book.

You could add a title to the cover or recreate scenes from your summer vacation inside the book to make it uniquely your own.

Since it involves detailed work, this project is best suited for upper elementary grades.

The relationship between bread and sugar

Summer Vacation Independent Research: The Relationship Between Bread and Sugar — Elementary to Middle School, Science/Home Economics
The relationship between bread and sugar

A summer research project you can work on while enjoying delicious food sounds great, doesn’t it? Here’s an experiment that explores the relationship between bread and sugar.

In this experiment, you make several batches of dough that differ only in the amount of sugar, bake the bread, and then compare the results.

Breads with less sugar turn out firm like French bread, while those with more sugar are moist and soft.

Let’s investigate why the outcomes change.

Also, don’t forget to record from which stage in the process the differences begin to appear.

Flower wooden clips

Flower wooden clips

Let’s make cute floral wooden clips.

We’ll create cherry blossom petals using paper punched out with a round punch.

Since it’s delicate work, use fine-tipped craft pliers to fold the pieces.

Connect five petals to form a cherry blossom.

Disassemble the wooden clip, paint it with acrylic paint or similar, let it dry, and reassemble it.

Then attach the cherry blossom you made with glue.

Because the work is a bit detailed, it’s suitable for upper elementary school students.

Decoration case

Casual chit-chat while easily decorating a candy tin with PET stickers ♡
Decoration case

Why not create a decorated case using plain candy tins or aluminum tins sold at 100-yen shops? You’ll use PET stickers, which are more durable and water-resistant than regular stickers.

Like painting on a canvas, freely place your favorite stickers as you like.

You can start by deciding on a design and then gathering stickers, or find stickers you want to use first and plan the design afterward.

There’s a collage element to it as well, so have fun and make your very own original case!

Water balloon jelly

[Experiment] Easy! I tried making edible water balloon jelly! / How to Make Balloon Jelly
Water balloon jelly

If it’s a science project where you get to make food, that might really boost motivation, right? (lol) This one lets you easily make cute, jiggly egg-shaped jelly with very few supplies—and since there’s no heat involved, even younger kids can do it.

All you need are the drink you want to turn into jelly, powdered gelatin, water balloons, and a pump for filling them with water.

First, wash the water balloons and pump thoroughly.

Warm the drink mixed with powdered gelatin in the microwave a little to dissolve the gelatin, then combine it with the reserved drink, pour it into the pump, and fill the balloons.

After chilling for a few hours, poke the water balloons with a fork or toothpick, and out pops a jiggly jelly.

That’s sure to get everyone excited!
