[Adult Sports Day] Fun Activities and Games for Grown-Ups & Classic Events

When you think of a sports day, it probably brings to mind a school event.

However, these days, some adults also hold sports days to boost teamwork at work or to deepen friendships among friends.

That said, when it actually comes time to plan one, it can be hard to think of events that suit adults, or you might struggle with what to choose because there are so many types of competitions.

In this article, we’ll introduce recommended events for an adults’ sports day!

We’ve gathered not only classic events and physically demanding ones, but also activities that let you use your head and have fun.

Use this as a reference when deciding on your lineup.

Let’s strengthen our bonds through a sports day!

[Adult Sports Day] Events and games adults can enjoy, plus classic competitions (21–30)

Spoon-and-ball carrying relay

The concentration needed to keep the ball from falling off the spoon is so much fun! Here’s an idea for a “spoon-and-ball relay.” You can enjoy this indoors.

Place a ball on a spoon, go around a cone, and pass it to the next person.

It’s a great way to build concentration while having fun, so it’s also recommended as a sports day event.

Both kids and adults can enjoy it, so why not adapt it as a parent–child activity? You can also switch the ball for different items to make it even more fun.

Be sure to include it in your sports day program!

Ball Carrying UNO

Guaranteed to get everyone hyped! Ball games × UNO. In PE classes or homeroom activities, pass the ball while interacting with classmates and feel a sense of accomplishment. A must-see for elementary and junior high school teachers and PE instructors!
Ball Carrying UNO

Here’s an idea for adapting the well-known board game UNO into a ball-carrying relay.

Form teams in circles, with each person holding a ball.

Choose someone to give commands, and everyone passes or moves the balls according to the commands—like “skip” or “one bounce.” The rules are simple, but you can make it more exciting by increasing the speed of the commands and enjoying the sense of achievement as a team.

For team competitions, you can create original rules, such as declaring the team that doesn’t drop the ball until the end the winner, to make it even more fun.

It’s also a great recommendation for sports day events.

Ball Carry Tag

Here’s an adapted version of “tag” with ball carrying.

The rules are very simple! Wearing a flag, teams start at the starting line and try to carry as many balls as possible to the goal within the time limit.

There are taggers (oni) in between, so be careful not to let them take your flag.

If a tagger takes your flag, reattach the flag placed by the tagger and return to the start to try again.

It’s also a team game where you aim to transport all the balls without getting caught.

It’s fun to come up with strategies, like having someone act as a decoy.

We also recommend switching between the carrying team and the tagger team and using this as an event in a sports day.

Giant Ball Relay

Giant Ball Relay

This is an event where the entire team lifts a giant ball overhead and passes it back from person to person.

Synchronizing timing is key, and the way everyone moves with full focus to keep the ball from dropping embodies true unity.

Because it can be done safely indoors, it’s easy to run even in limited spaces like gymnasiums, and it’s welcoming to participants regardless of athletic ability.

Adding curves or obstacles to the course creates more dramatic developments that naturally make spectators want to cheer.

Calling out to one another and passing the ball in rhythm also strengthens team bonds.

With room for strategy and creativity within its simple movements, this event can bring a fresh new element to any sports day.

Giant Ball Toss Relay

Jumbo beach balls are perfect for sports days and events! In this video, they’re competing to see how many times they can toss the ball, but you can also adapt it into a game where you carry the ball to a goal.

Because the ball is so large, it looks fun and is easy to move.

The best part is that everyone can play together—from kids to adults.

With a little creativity, you can come up with all kinds of games, so it’s fun to brainstorm ideas and design your own.

Moving your body naturally brings out smiles.

Be sure to try using a jumbo beach ball at your next event!

Five-person, six-legs giant ball roll

Five-person, six-legs giant ball roll

Rolling a big ball to the finish line in teams is a classic sports day event known as the “giant ball roll.” If the usual version feels too plain, how about adding a twist with a “Five-Person Six-Leg Giant Ball Roll”? Form teams of five, tie their legs together with ropes, and have them roll the giant ball while moving in a five-person, six-legged formation.

Since they can’t move their legs freely, the team’s coordination is tested even more! It’s also a great event for building camaraderie, so consider adding it to your sports day program.

Dizzy bat relay

Sports Day (Dizzy Bat Relay) ①
Dizzy bat relay

Here’s a dizzy bat relay everyone can enjoy.

Split into teams, place your forehead on the bat, and spin the designated number of times.

After spinning, kick the ball once, pick it up, run one lap of the track, and pass it to the next person.

The speed of your spins will be the key.

You might get dizzy and have trouble running straight, so make sure to do this safely in a spacious area free of obstacles.

The relay ends when the final runner crosses the finish line.

Do your best to keep your balance and aim for the goal!
