Recommended summer songs for high school students. Midsummer classics and popular tracks.

There are so many songs that use words that evoke summer—like the blue ocean, clear skies, fireworks, and festivals—as their themes or in their lyrics! When summer comes around, you probably feel like listening to songs with that summery vibe, but with so many to choose from, it can be hard to decide what to play.

So in this article, I’ll introduce some summer tunes that I especially recommend for high school students! I’ve picked out love songs and youth anthems that students can likely relate to, so be sure to listen while reading the lyrics!

Song of PointillismTenbyou no Uta

Song of PointillismTenbyou no Uta

This song, with its piano timbre and beautiful vocal work, is “Tenbyō no Uta,” created by Mrs.

GREEN APPLE.

It was originally a collaboration featuring singer-songwriter Sonoko Inoue, and later a solo version by Inoue was also released.

Set at the end of summer, the lyrics portray a couple who think sincerely of each other, and many listeners are surely moved by the purity of their feelings.

At the same time, parts of the lyrics can be read as suggesting that their feelings might not be returned, or that the two may someday part ways, adding a touch of poignancy.

It’s a beautiful ballad perfect for late summer—be sure to listen while reading the lyrics.

Live the summerRyokushokushakai

This is the third digital-only single by Ryokuoushoku Shakai, a four-member mixed-gender pop-rock band whose straightforward, translucent vocals and pop sensibility have won strong support, especially among younger listeners.

The track was selected as the theme song for “RIDE OF KANAGAWA 2020 High School Baseball,” held in Kanagawa Prefecture.

Its rich piano sound intertwined with emotional guitar phrases feels so satisfying, doesn’t it? The arrangement that suddenly clears the air in the chorus conveys both the freshness of summer and the complexity of youth.

With its addictive blend of driving momentum and a unique sense of weightless drift, it’s a perfect summer song to recommend to high school students.

EsperanzaNishino Kana

Kana Nishino’s 14th single, released on May 18, 2011.

It’s a pop song incorporating Latin-style sounds, but for some reason she appears in hippie-inspired outfits in the music video.

“Esperanza” means “hope” in Japanese.

Brilliant RainKing Gnu

I’d like to introduce “Ame Sansan” as a perfect summer song by King Gnu.

It was written specifically for the TV drama “Old Rookie.” The lyrics depict the beauty and fragility of youth set against a summer backdrop.

With many images centered on summer rain, the song carries a cool, refreshing vibe.

At the same time, it includes a message that cheers on those who are giving their all, making it a great choice both for relaxing and for when you need a boost.

MAN WITH A MISSION, now a Japanese rock band active on the global stage.

Among their songs, “FLY AGAIN 2019” is perfect for capturing the heat of summer.

Since this track was also the theme song for the TV drama “Radiation House: Diagnostic Report of the Radiology Department,” many people may have first discovered it through the show.

Its fiery sound and rhythm amplify the summer vibe.

In The ZooSuchmos

Suchmos “In The Zoo” (Official Music Video)
In The ZooSuchmos

It’s a summer song with a psychedelic rock flavor.

And believe it or not, the performers are Suchmos, who first gained fame for city pop.

These days, Suchmos have evolved into a band with broad musicality, playing whatever genres they’re into at the moment.

It’s a bit of a long track, but the quality is so high it makes you lose track of time—so be sure to listen all the way through.

Summer Diveflumpool

It was included as the B-side on their second single released in 2009.

It was used as the theme song for the Gaga-distributed film “MW” and appeared in numerous other media.

It’s a bright, uplifting track that’s quintessentially flumpool.
