Japanese heavy metal bands. Popular bands in the Japanese metal scene (71–80)
IllusionNOVELA

A Japanese progressive hard rock band that debuted in 1980.
While they might fall a bit outside the strict HM/HR category, I think it’s fair to say that the roots of the Japanese metal boom that surged in the late 1980s began with NOVELA’s debut, considering the members’ connections and influence.
In 1980, LOUDNESS didn’t even exist yet, but NOVELA’s impact on the Kansai HM/HR scene was tremendous.
At the time, vocalist Hisakatsu Igarashi’s high-tone singing was incredibly shocking.
I never imagined back then that, more than twenty years later, I would end up producing Igarashi’s solo album (lol).
Ark StormArk Storm

The 2000s were a time when heavy rock diversified, and many Japanese bands found commercial success with loud sounds that absorbed new styles like metalcore and screamo.
Still, if you’re craving classic, straight-ahead heavy metal, the band I recommend is Ark Storm.
Formed in 2001 around Katsu Ohta—highly acclaimed as a precision-perfect shred guitarist—the group drew attention from the start, with well-known figures from the hard rock and heavy metal scene taking part.
While their foundation is the so-called neoclassical sound, the back-and-forth between technical guitar and dazzling keyboards, the rock-solid groove of the rhythm section, and the soaring vocals make for a melodic sound that should be approachable even for beginners.
They’ve also released a best-of album, so that’s a great place to start exploring their music.
ASIAN CHAOSGYZE

A melodic death metal band formed around Ryoji and Shuji—brothers from Hokkaido.
Aiming for overseas markets from early on, their 2013 debut was released abroad before its domestic release, which drew attention.
The following year, they made their major-label debut in Japan as well.
Carved In Your MindArgument Soul

Without being swayed by changing trends, the Nagoya-based Argument Soul delivers orthodox power metal and is highly regarded for their solid skills and unwavering musical identity.
Formed in 1998 around guitarist Kenichi Teraoka, they’ve released only two original albums, but both come highly recommended for anyone who wants to experience the essence of Japanese heavy metal.
Savor the aggressive guitar riffs, the tight rhythm section, and Toshinori Kamiya’s vocal performance, which effortlessly ranges from resonant mid-tones to soaring high-pitched shouts.
Metal SabelSABBRABELLS

SABBRABELLS is a band formed in 1980.
The Kansai metal scene was hot in the ’80s, but they, together with ANTHEM, were active as part of the “Tokyo Heavy Metal Corps.” However, they eventually disbanded.
Kazuya Yoshii covered their song “HELL’S RIDER” on one of his cover albums.
Thrust of GodDrive Far

Drive Far is defined by an energetic, dynamic performance that fuses fierce guitar riffs with vocals by Julien from France.
Since forming in 2002, they’ve continued to captivate fans in Japan and abroad with a sound that incorporates elements of rock and punk.
In 2007, they released “Drive Far” on BUDDY RECORDS and began touring.
In 2009, they broadened their activities further, collaborating with Tetsuo Hara, the original creator of Fist of the North Star, to produce the image song for CR Soten no Ken.
Their tracks, which carry a unique depth beneath the intensity, are highly recommended for metal fans.
Charge!ABIGAIL

A three-piece metal band that boldly embraces the black metal genre—still a rarity on the Japanese music scene.
Drawing inspiration from American adult magazines and Takeshi Kitano’s yakuza films, their distinctive worldview, paired with a sound reminiscent of early thrash metal bands, creates a truly singular presence.
Beyond the sheer impact, their high-level musicianship unleashes a sound that you can easily imagine sending live audiences into overdrive.
They’re an internationally active metal band that also works perfectly as an entry point for listeners curious about black metal.
