A Japanese heavy metal band. A popular band in the Japanese metal scene.

After the 1980s Japanese metal movement—commonly known as “JapaMeta”—heavy metal in Japan experienced a prolonged decline.

However, as virtuosic musicianship and intense musical styles have once again come into the spotlight, the number of young bands and groups finding success overseas has been on the rise.

In this feature, we’ll introduce popular Japanese heavy metal bands—from legendary scene-defining acts to in-demand younger groups.

Dive into their fiery sound and experience the music that has built such a devoted fan base.

Je l’aimeMoi dix Mois

Moi dix Mois, a driving force in the black metal scene.

They are a solo gothic metal sound project formed around guitarist Mana.

It’s a subtle distinction, but while they’re widely recognized as a band, the official stance is that it’s a solo project.

Be that as it may, their appeal lies in a style that incorporates a variety of genres and motifs.

I hope you enjoy their chaotic worldview.

LOVEBORIS

LOVEBORIS

A three-piece band that absorbs every genre and forges a sound all their own.

Since beginning activities in 1992, they have released numerous works on the indie scene and have gone on to earn high acclaim overseas.

They have also broadened their activities by contributing songs to Japanese films such as Confessions.

Since forming in 2012, BRIDEAR, a power metal band from Fukuoka, has continued to captivate fans in Japan and abroad with their overwhelming musicianship and catchy melodies.

Their third album, “Bloody Bride,” released in May 2021, reached No.

18 on the Oricon chart.

They are highly regarded overseas as well, with particularly strong popularity in Europe.

The band’s appeal lies in KIMI’s powerful, soaring vocals and the outstanding twin-guitar work of AYUMI and MOE.

The rhythm section of HARU and NATSUMI also delivers superb performances.

As a new standard-bearer of Japanese metal, they are a group you can’t take your eyes off.

A melodic death metal band formed in 2010, centered around members of SERPENT who had been active since the 1990s.

Despite numerous lineup changes, they boast top-tier popularity and prowess among Japanese melodic death metal acts.

Their overwhelmingly classical, sorrowful melodies give them a truly unique presence.

While it’s a different kind of heavy than hard rock, Genkaku Allergy—a unit formed by members of Kamaitachi, one of the original “visual kei” bands that were active and popular since the dawn of the movement—is something I’d strongly recommend checking out if you want to dig deeper into the history of visual kei or are interested in genres like Japanese metal and hardcore.

In stark contrast to Kamaitachi’s mischievous punk rock with its comedic streak, Genkaku Allergy pushed a hard-edged image to the forefront; their noisy sound, including elements of industrial metal, might actually come across as straightforwardly cool even to listeners unfamiliar with Kamaitachi.

Their commitment to a hard style even after moving to a major label truly embodies the spirit of “punk,” and through their music, you can also get a feel for the atmosphere of the 1990s—a time when bands with a sound like theirs could thrive in the mainstream.

PARADOXX is a girls’ metal band from Tokyo, known for a melodic sound influenced by hard rock and heavy metal.

In 2024, they released the album “Paradoxical SINGULARITY” and have been highly active with a tour.

Their debut single, featuring power metal–style high-register vocals, captivated many fans.

Each member has a distinct personality—for example, drummer SHONO, despite coming from a track and field background, surprisingly isn’t particularly athletic.

Their performances are both intense and beautiful—truly a must-see.

They’re recommended not only for HR/HM fans but also for anyone interested in Japanese female-vocal bands.

TerrorismUZUMAKI

UZUMAKI is a band I’d recommend not only to fans of heavy metal but also to those who like hip-hop.

They’re pioneers of rap metal, delivering solid, hard-hitting rap over the raw power of heavy metal.

You can also sense death metal elements, such as the inclusion of shouts.

In any case, their sound is incredibly intense, so I suggest starting by listening to their tracks.

If you go through their albums in order, you’ll also get a feel for the band’s history.
