Japanese heavy metal bands. Popular bands in the Japanese metal scene (41–50)
HEART’S ON FIREBOWWOW

Emerging during the heyday of 1970s hard rock, BOW WOW played a pivotal role in the history of Japanese hard rock and heavy metal.
The fact that Metallica’s Lars Ulrich is an avid fan of BOW WOW alone should convey their greatness even to music listeners who mainly follow Western rock.
The band name was coined by producer Yoshimi Ueno, and although the group initially took shape under a talent agency’s concept akin to an idol band, their authentic hard rock sound—centered on the overwhelming technique of the genius guitarist Kyoji Yamamoto—garnered attention far beyond the idol framework.
They were recognized internationally early on, opening for major overseas acts such as KISS and Aerosmith.
After original member Mitsuhiro Saito left, the band changed its name to VOW WOW, evolving into an even more authentic, straight-ahead hard rock outfit.
Despite continuing to enjoy success on the global stage, they unfortunately disbanded in 1990.
Be sure to check out not only BOW WOW and VOW WOW, but also the subsequent careers of the members involved.
Burning Like The FireX-RAY

X-RAY was a heavy metal band active from 1981 to 1986.
They had a very short formative period and debuted soon after forming.
Among the members, guitarist Susumu Yuasa was just 17 at the time and was hailed as a genius guitarist.
SHOCKRAJAS

RAJAS is a heavy metal band formed in 1980.
They disbanded once in 1988, but reunited in 2002 and are still actively performing today.
The 1980s were a hot time for the Kansai Japametal scene, and RAJAS is also a band from Kansai.
The vocalist is Kuniko Morikawa.
Do not mix (danger).Kinniku Shoujo Tai

Known by the abbreviation “Kinsho,” this four-piece rock band has continued to captivate fans with its unique presence despite a whirlwind of lineup changes since its formation.
The seemingly contrasting elements—the eccentric lyrics and unpredictable melodies by vocalist Kenji Ohtsuki, and the classical yet lyrical guitar work of Fumihiko Kitsutaka—combine to create an addictive appeal.
Although Ohtsuki has said, “If I were an extremely good singer and Kitsutaka were the leader, Kinsho would have become a metal band,” suggesting they don’t consider themselves a metal band, their sound has undoubtedly continued to influence many younger metal bands.
Burning SkyBLIZARD

BLIZARD is a heavy metal band formed in 1984.
They belonged to the so-called Being camp and were a band put together with members selected primarily for their looks.
Despite their talent, it seems they often struggled with being seen as a visually focused act.
Choose meBAND-MAID

A five-member girls’ metal band that thrills fans with the captivating contrast between their cute maid outfits and their fierce metal sound.
Their twin vocals with opposing timbres, technical twin guitars, and a powerful rhythm section produce an aggressive sound that appeals not only to metal fans but to a wide range of listeners.
Their high level of musicianship—far beyond what the “girls’ band” category can contain—has earned acclaim overseas as well, showcasing a pure fusion with Japanese culture.
They are a highly promising metal band poised to lead the metal scene within J-pop.
PANTHEONMatenrou Opera

As a visual kei metal band, this five-piece enjoys strong popularity not only in Japan but also in Europe.
With a dedicated keyboardist in the lineup, their dramatic symphonic metal sound—rooted in a unique aesthetic and high-level technical prowess—has earned high praise from heavy metal fans as well.
