They debuted in 1983 with the album “Maten ~ HARD SECTION,” which immediately sent shockwaves through the domestic metal scene.

Notable for Shin Yuasa’s technical, melodic guitar work—he debuted at just 17—and Akira Fujimoto’s four-octave vocals.

Before disbanding in 1986, they released four studio albums, leaving a significant impact on subsequent Japanese bands.

In 2018, a 10-disc complete box set was released to commemorate the 35th anniversary of their debut, proving their enduring popularity.

Formed in 1994, Inugami Circus-dan is a distinctive band that plays kayō-inspired rock with a strong underground vibe.

They draw attention with an original sound that incorporates elements of hard rock and punk, as well as striking visuals featuring white face paint and kimono attire.

They made their major-label debut in 2003, but returned to the indie scene in 2006 and have continued under their own label.

In 2011, they redefined their direction as “a more lyrical, more extreme, underground, Japanese-style band” and changed their name to the current Inugami Saakasudan.

In April 2020, they released their first single under the new lineup, “Mezawari na Ibunshi,” and have remained active even during the pandemic with streaming concerts and more.

Having carved out a unique place in Japan’s rock scene, their music is perfect for listeners seeking a one-of-a-kind worldview.

THE UNDERWORLDDEATHGAZE

A five-member visual kei metal band formed in Nagoya in 2003.

With an original sound that fuses intensity and beauty, they have been recognized not only within the visual kei scene but also as a prominent act in the loud music genre.

In 2013, their 10th anniversary, they drew attention by releasing a best-of album and embarking on their first overseas tour.

Until announcing an indefinite hiatus in October 2014, they left a significant mark on Japan’s metal scene.

Their genre-defying musicality and overwhelming live performances are recommended not only for traditional metal fans but also for those eager to explore new music.

“.”SoWhat?

So What? is a metal band under Yoshimoto Kogyo, also known for having Luke Takamura, formerly of Seikima-II, serve as their recording producer.

Their classic metal sound and comical lyrics—combined with powerful vocals and shouts—captivated not only metal fans but a wide range of listeners.

Though they sadly disbanded in 2003, vocalist Tetsuya Kan is continuing his career as THE Kan.

They’re an aggressive yet pop-leaning metal band that we’d recommend even to those who might still be a bit intimidated by hard-hitting metal.

Despite repeated breakups, hiatuses, and lineup changes, SEX MACHINEGUNS have continued to thrive as a band delivering classic, straight-ahead metal.

While they are often seen as a comedic band, shouldn’t their achievements as “virtually the only young metal band that fought on the front lines of the major scene during the period when metal was least popular in the ’90s” be recognized more highly? At the time, many young listeners experienced metal for the first time through Machineguns, and it’s no exaggeration to say that their direct, German-metal-inspired sound helped keep the flame of metal from dying out in Japan.
