We’ve selected everything from heavyweight bands that represent the nation to groups whose diverse musicality defies the boundaries of metal.

Japanese metal bands: from classic to unique, popular bands in Japan’s metal scene (51–60)

A Witch Named AspilcuettaABIGAIL

ABIGAIL is a black metal band formed in 1992.

As one of Japan’s veteran black metal bands, their sound—rich with an underground vibe—connects to the earliest wave of black metal built on a thrash metal foundation, and has earned high praise overseas.

They are highly active internationally, undertaking overseas tours and headlining foreign metal festivals, and are one of those Japanese metal bands that might actually be more well-known abroad than at home.

MarionetteMary’s Blood

MarionetteMary's Blood

Formed in 2009, Mary’s Blood has garnered attention overseas as an all-female heavy metal band.

Their appeal lies in the ferocious sound woven by EYE’s powerful vocals, SAKI’s lightning-fast guitar, RIO’s thunderous bass, and MARI’s hard-hitting drums.

In 2013, they performed at a festival in the United States, delivering a commanding show before an audience of 3,000.

Their skill is unquestionable, with endorsement deals from instrument manufacturers to prove it.

The fusion of accessible melodies with a high-velocity heavy sound has earned them support from a wide range of listeners, from metal newcomers to die-hard fans.

Kelly SIMONZ, a shred guitarist known for his instructional book series for metal guitarists “Super Shredder Training Gyps” (he’s unmistakably Japanese), specializes in Yngwie Malmsteen–style neoclassical metal while astonishing audiences with lightning-fast techniques across a wide range of styles.

The band he leads is Kelly SIMONZ’s BLIND FAITH.

He’s also recognized on a global level for his skills, having performed with Mark Boals, the vocalist from Yngwie’s own band, among others.

TerrorismUZUMAKI

UZUMAKI is a band I’d recommend not only to fans of heavy metal but also to those who like hip-hop.

They’re pioneers of rap metal, delivering solid, hard-hitting rap over the raw power of heavy metal.

You can also sense death metal elements, such as the inclusion of shouts.

In any case, their sound is incredibly intense, so I suggest starting by listening to their tracks.

If you go through their albums in order, you’ll also get a feel for the band’s history.

Speculative Mythologyyōsei teikoku

Formed in 1997 in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Fairy Empire is known for a musical style that fuses a wide range of genres, including techno, trance, gothic, and heavy rock.

The band’s unique concept is to use music to remind people of the existence of fairies in modern society, where belief in them is fading.

Each member is assigned a “rank,” which rises or falls based on their contributions to the Fairy Empire—a distinctive system the band employs.

Fans are called “subjects,” and live performances are referred to as “ceremonies,” elements that have captivated many with the band’s unique worldview.

While rooted in heavy metal, Fairy Empire’s music is characterized by an individualistic sound that incorporates a variety of influences.

Ethereal Sin is a symphonic black metal band formed around vocalist Yama Darkblaze, continuing its activities despite numerous lineup changes.

While shifting its band concept depending on the timing of each release, the track that became their first official music video showcases a Japanese-inspired black metal style they dub “Japanese Mystic.” In 2015, they also performed at Wacken Open Air in Germany, one of the world’s largest metal festivals.

Je l’aimeMoi dix Mois

Moi dix Mois, the driving force of Japan’s gothic metal scene.

They are a solo gothic metal sound project formed around guitarist Mana.

It’s a subtle point, but while they are widely recognized as a band, the official stance is that it’s a solo project.

Be that as it may, their appeal lies in a style that incorporates a variety of genres and motifs.

I hope you’ll enjoy their chaotic world.
